***Note you will need your CSU logon to access full article*** O'Brien discusses the development of social media policies in local government offices, the casualisation of social media use is discussed and the fact that social media is everywhere and used by almost everyone warrants the need for policies and protocols that inform users of their rights and responsibilities. Instead of restricting social media use, O'Brien advocates that educating and informing users through guidelines is far more proactive and the way forward for web 2.0 technologies.

This is an example of a social media policy in use for a large government organisation and library. The policy was updated in December 2010 and covers in detail the regulations, guidelines and responsibilities of users using social media within the national library.

Telstra's policy on social media engagement is a good example of how organisations can approach the use of social media within the workforce. While Telstra's main focus is on technology this doesn't mean that other organisation whose main area of business is not technology should be complacent about addressing social media use. The three Rs is a good guideline for employees to remember when using social media: Representing, Responsibility and Respect are key components to using common sense and judgement when using social media within an organisation.
