Whether you're just getting into listening to science podcasts or are looking for a few new shows to add to your weekly collection, we've highlighted what we think are some of the best science podcasts out there right now. They're informative, compelling, and even, at times, pretty darn funny, so make sure to check out one, two, or even all of these great science programs the next time you're looking for a little edutainment.

The website isn't a collection of Khan Academy-style videos, it's a place where you will find videos featuring real MIT students explaining concepts while showing them as hands-on demonstrations or experiments. YouTube for Schools lets schools access free educational YouTube videos while limiting access to other YouTube content. Students can learn from more than 400,000 educational videos, from well-known organizations like Stanford, PBS and TED, and from up-and-coming YouTube partners with millions of views, like Khan Academy, Steve Spangler Science and numberphile. Schools can also customize their YouTube for Schools experience, adding videos that are only viewable within their school network.

Mxit is South Africa's largest social network with over 50 million subscribers. 70% of those subscribers are between the ages of 15 and 25. Mxit is available to anyone with a WAP-enabled phone and works on almost kinds of 3000 mobile handsets. South Africa has a mobile penetration of 105% and of that 60% of all users have WAP-enabled phones. These statistics indicate that if Siyavula wants to make it's openly-licensed content available to as many learners as possible, Mxit simply cannot be ignored.

2012 looks as if it might be the year that OER and open access reach the mainstream, globally and in South Africa. In the last few months in South Africa, the national department responsible for schools had announced the take-up of a major OER science and maths resource and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has included in a new Green Paper a recommendation for the widespread use of open educational resources.

Physics Sketchpad is a free Android app that physics teachers may find useful. The app, which is still in beta, provides a simple interface creating simulations of the effects of global gravity on object and gravity between objects. The app also allows users to create collisions to view their effects on objects. The simulations that you create can be saved in your Physics Sketchpad notebooks. Sharing notebooks is a feature advertised for future development.
