I use several online "blogs" or "websites" to communicate my teaching to the community...the goal is to reach parents, other staff and prospective employers (from time to time). I use: weebly.com, wordpress.com and blogger.com. Blogger isn't particularly attractive but it is within the solid Google suite and you can set a blog as private so that only who you choose can view - great for young kids to get started while protecting their privacy.
I am in the process of setting up a class blog project for Y1 and Y5 students. The students are really enthusiastic about it, but the parents have been luke-warm. I saw it as a way to give the parents access to the classroom, as they often feedback that they do not feel included.
I am still going to forge ahead though - they key element is that the students love showcasing their learning. My next step is to have them commenting on each other's work (positively!) as well as having teachers hi-five what they're seeing.
