The use of ICT in education of Brazil

The Brazil need to improve the competence ofteachers in using information and communicationtechnologies in education. The way the educationalsystem incorporates ICTs directly affects the reduction of the digital divide in the country.

Several points should be taken into account when oneseeks to answer questions such as: How ICTs can beused to accelerate the development towards the goal of "education for all and lifelong learning"? How they can provide better balance between wide coverageand excellence in education? How she can contributeto reconcile universality and specificity of localknowledge? How can education prepare individuals and society so that they dominate the technologies that increasingly permeate all sectors of life and cantake advantage of them?

First, Icts are only a part of a continuous developmentof technologies, beginning with the chalk and the books, all of which may support and enrich learning.
Second, ICT, like any tool, should be used and adaptedto serve educational purposes.
Third, various legal and ethical issues, such as thoselinked to the property of knowledge, the increasingtreatment of education as a commodity, to the globalization of education with regard to cultural diversity, interfere with the widespread use of ICT in education.
In the search for solutions to these issues, UNESCOcooperates with the Brazilian Government in promoting actions of dissemination of ICT in schoolswith the aim of improving the quality of the teaching-learning process, understanding that digital literacy isa natural consequence of the frequent use of these technologies. The Ministry of education has the goalof universalizing the computer labs in all public schools until 2010, including the rural areas. UNESCOalso cooperates with the TV Escola Programme, to explore the convergence of digital media in increasing the interactivity of television contents used in face-to-face and distance education.

UNESCO in Brazil counts on the partnership ofUNESCO Chairs standing in distance education in various Brazilian universities, that use ICT to promote democratisation of access to knowledge in the country.
