World Hunger: The Problem Left Behind - 0 views

As the third major international crop, the price of corn rising is affecting the globe. As droughts plague the agriculture of African countries, the price of corn is surging, reminding us again that world hunger is still prevalent in the world today. The title of the article was eye-catching and reading it through "economic lens" really made it interesting. Droughts in Africa is affecting the agriculture of corn and making crops scarcer. In addition, price of fertilizers is two to four times more expensive in Africa, detrimentally affecting the region, which uses the most fertilizers. The opportunity cost of purchasing fertilizers is enormous as the money spent on fertilizers can be used for providing services for workers, better equipment or improving on infrastructures. Furthermore, farming technology is still quite primitive compares to North American standards and as a result the production possibility curves are smaller than other agricultural regions. This article was really interesting because it relates so closely with what we have learned so far, and it reminded me that world hunger is still very much present in our world.

Following the recent government unrest in Yemen, the presence of terrorist groups in the country and the ongoing economic crisis the country is facing serious issues with food and hunger. The country depends solely on imported food due to the unavailability of arable land, but due to the lack of funds the government is not able to do so. The country is already in a weak state due to the fall of the government and presence of Al- Qaeda occupied regions in the country. The country has also been hitten hard by the global increase in fuel and food prices Due to the excessively high prices 5 million people or 22% of the population that mainly consists of the poor economic section cannot feed themselves enough or go hungry to bed on most nights. Yemen is the third country in the world to have the largest number of malnourished children. Most of these kid's parents are landless labours, so they cannot grow their own food and because of the high prices, they cannot afford to buy it either.

There is a lot of articles about the problems with the harvest of corn. It is a big problem because it affect everybody. USA produce 40 % of the corn production. The the had bad crop it will affect everybody because the price will increase and the supply will decreasy, it will cause huge problemes to the poor people, because the won´t be able to afford it. I think that this is one of the bigest problem of the world because each day more and more people die of hunger. We must increase the food supply.

This article talks about the economic growth that is occuring in many African countries, this is probably the region with the highest growth of the world. In the past and still now Africa has been the region with the highest inequalities and the one with the highest poverty rates, however, due to its productivity more and more people are becoming weathier and even a middle class is starting to emerge. Furthermore, economic growth doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is being benefitted, the majority of this continent lives below poverty levels, and live under disease and hunger. The Economist had labelled Africa "the hopeless continent" a decade ago, a profound change has taken hold. Labour productivity has been rising. It is now growing by, on average, 2.7% a year. Trade between Africa and the rest of the world has increased by 200% since 2000. Inflation dropped from 22% in the 1990s to 8% in the past decade.
