  • deepening the budget deficit.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • corn ethanol generated more carbon dioxide than gasoline
  • ending the subsidies would
  • have no effect on gas prices for consumers and only a trivial effect on industry profits,
  •
The Congress is preparing to cancel subsidy for corn ethanol and the tax break for oil companies. The tax credit deepened the budget deficit. It also raised corn price and food price as farmers started to replace other crops with corn. However the House of Representatives won't pass any law that would end the subsidy because their paymasters want the subsidy to keep the demand up.

  •
This article is very interesting because it shows another situation pertaining to subsidies that we have not discussed in a lot of depth, this being the removal or reduction of subsidies. This article also shows the clout that the International Monetary Fund holds, as well as the impact that subsides or lack thereof can have on the citizens of the country in which they are implemented.

Europe investigates unfair Chinese Subsidies - 0 views

  •
The Chinese government has been unfairly implementing subsidies for solar panel companies within China. Thus, the companies have been able to sell their Solar panels at costs that are lower than the cost to manufacture such items. This has caused European companies to ask for intensified investigation from the European Union. However, Europe is reluctant to go at a trade war with China and thus, the situation is gridlocked. Too many companies would suffer from direct war.

I really enjoyed this article, though it may be a little to subjective at times. However it still arises a great point, this article goes in depth about how the U.S. government has been giving out subsidies to big oil companies. This article also gives a little history and historical background on the topic dating back to when hugo chavez took power in south america. All in all it is a great article.

India Likely to Miss 2012-2013 Fiscal Deficit Goal - 0 views

  •
A new poll shows that India's economic recovery may not go according to plan. The country aimed this year to keep the fiscal deficit at 5.3% of Gross Domestic Product, .5% lower than last year's. Reuters polled 21 different economists to get their opinion on the matter, and most agree that India's higher spending on fuel and fertilizer subsidies could keep the country from reaching its new goal. Because of this, it seems likely that India's credit rating will soon be downgraded from BBB- to a "junk-bond" status.

Du and Etisalat could still do much better - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the duopoly in the telecommunication industry here in the UAE, Etisalat and Du. the article clearly points out the fact that both companies over charge, stating that internet here costs 50% more, when compared to internet pricing in the UK. This market was a monopoly, dominated by Etisalat but the entering of DU is said to be rapid and thus they are suffering from some diseconomies of scale. The way the article concluded was quite interesting as it stated that the Abu Dhabi government subsidized it's airline industry so that people could visit and enjoy lower rates, and then says it should keep the broadband cost more competitive so that it can attract the companies of tomorrow
