    1. Link to lesson
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/physics/elements-ipad-app.html

    2. Subject area
This lesson is for the high school chemistry

    3. Grade level
This lesson is for 10, 11, 12 grades.

    4. Brief description of lesson/activity
This lesson is within the 2006 MA Science Standard number 3: Periodicity: Central Concepts: Repeating (periodic) patterns of physical and chemical properties occur among elements that define families with similar properties. The periodic table displays the repeating patterns, which are related to the atoms' outermost electrons.
I actually use the lessons from NOVA-pbs a lot, but through regular PC computer; and they are great. I just downloaded this app to my iPad, and explore it, and they are as great as on the PC. This app shows the properties of all elements in the periodic table. It also allows students to add protons, neutrons, and electrons to build an atom. In addition it also teach how to do the electron configuration.
This app fulfils parts of the standard number 3-Periodicity

    5. Strengths and/or weaknesses
The strength of this app is it is very visual. I do like the sound when you add protons, neutrons, or electrons.
I cannot say it is a weakness, but this app does not cover all of the concepts in the standard number 3 - periodicity. I guess you have to use many resources to cover all the materials you need to cover.

    6. Inspiration derived from this lesson/activity
I am actually a science teacher, not a computer engineer or computer programming. These days, I kind of think I would rather work in the computer field because the technology is moving so fast. In the old days, students would have to learn from paper and pencil, and used their own imagination to think about something they could not see or touch with their 5 senses. Nowadays, with all the technology - PC, Mac, iPad, students can see how something so small like atoms works. I think this is a positive thing, and it will help students learn better.

PS. I actually learn how to take picture from my iPad from this activity. I wonder how I can take video from the steps of using iPad.

I am an ELL myself, and after researching and test many apps, the best apps in my opinion is google translate and dictionary.com (premium version). The following 3 websites list many apps for ELL.

I used google translate a lot in my classroom and for myself. When I had difficult students' names, I used google translate to help me pronounce their names so I can practice before I actually meet students. In class, when there are some difficult words, I just use google translate to translate from English to whatever language my students use.

Dictionary.com is also a great app. I find that the sentence examples are very useful because it shows how to use the word.

During this assignment, I found the app "OverDrive Media COnsole (OMC)" which connects your mobile device to any library that you have the library card. You can borrow any electronic items such as ebooks, audiobooks, movie to view on your device.

I actually went to my public library today to get the pin in order to use the "overdrive" app. I actually like it a lot; I can borrow ebook and audio book. Library has many resources, especially big library like Boston Public Library. I recommend my students to borrow items, such as books, from library all the times. I told my Thai friends to borrow audio, books, or video for their children to practice English at home.

    1. Title of the website, app or resources you shared.
    http://www.classdojo.com/ - classroom management
    https://www.edmodo.com/ - productivity

    2. Summary of what can be found on this website, app or resource.
I search "classroom management" apps on iPad, and classdojo, the free apps, came up with the highest rating. This apps allows teachers to monitor students' behavior and give real time feedback and awards as dojo points. It also gives the printout report to be sent directly to parents.
I actually used "edmodo" in my classroom, and I love it. It allows me to set calendar for different classes, and students submit their work online. It also provides online quiz tools which students can get the feedback immediately. Students can also collaborate with one another. Teachers can assign group. My students are very conscious of getting their assignments in on time which is much better that paper based submission. It helps both students and teachers to get organized. We cannot say that we lose the paper.

    3. In reviewing the evaluation resources, what criteria do you think are the most important to look at when deciding what app to use? Why?
For me, the price and the ease of use are the most important criteria. I think I would rather find ONLY ONE apps that is not too complex to use for students and teachers, and have many functions even though I have to pay a little money. There are so many apps that advertise as great apps; but if you use all the apps, both teachers and students will get so confused with login and password. As it is right now in the digital world, I am having some difficulty keeping with all my accounts and passwords.

    1. Summarize your article or video. This video describes the 4 skills in 21st century learning: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity that are embedded in games. Even though students utilize these skills while they are playing games, but they do not realize it. As teachers, we have to do something to point to them that they have been using these skills all along and help students to transfer these skills that they have learned while playing games to real life application. 2. How does your article or video relate to Module Two content and using iPads in the classroom? IPad offers many functions and apps that allow students to play games. In addition, view and explore certain lessons such as cell function on iPad using the apps is much clearer than reading on a conventional textbook. 3. What additional benefits/challenges do you see in using iPads/mobile devices? My students do their online homework on their iPad while they are at their jobs. iPad is small to carry around, and Apple makes it durable enough than conventional laptops. The challenges are still the price and learning the technology 4. What impacted you most about the article or video? One of my students once said if all lessons are like playing games, he will be the smartest student. The time has changed to teach lessons using chalk board, book, and pencil. The new generation of students grows up with technology, and therefore we, as teachers, have to learn to adapt to students' method of learning.
