The usage of hotel bookings and GDS have risen 14% since 2011 whereas the hotels direct website bookings have only increased by 3%. "...As key influencers in booking decisions, hotels need to merchandise themselves to travel agents at the point of sale through the GDS." Travel agents are saying that using GDS has been very important during their work day.

As I know that the not only hotel, but other hospitality & tourism industry as well are competing with travel agent for using GDS; many have built their own online commerce to promote their direct booking. Because this trend is new; therefore, increase in 3% is reasonable and as the competition goes on, which e-commerce way will dominate the market will be answered in near future.

The hotel industry must keep up with their e-commerce marketing plans. The GDS is flooding the market with choices of deals and bundles which make it hard to resist.
