The students claimed this website was breaching the copyrights the students owned for the essays they wrote. There was a countersuit filed against one of the students accusing because the student in question was already cheating the essays he was writing. This article discusses the problem of whether your work is really yours and is just another step in the process of trying to make rules to govern the internet.

Harvard Medical School is backing off a new student policy that would have restricted interaction with the news media after students complained it would chill their ability to talk about current issues in medicine, school officials said Tuesday.

What's surprising, however, is not just the alarming number of students who say they cheat, but also the number of students who think it's OK to do so.

Today the Posse Foundation selects about 600 students a year, from eight different cities. They are grouped into posses of 10 students from the same city and go together to an elite college; about 40 colleges now participate in the program.

Many students in this new generation are plagiarizing other people's work for academic gain. Some college professors hypothesize that this is due t the laziness of students nowadays. Others believe it is because students were never taught about plagiarizing in middle school and highschool, so they do not understand that what they are doing is bad. However, regardless the case, internet is leading to an easy accessibility of past works, which makes it further difficult to stop plagiarizing.

Shirley Middle School teaches students about the importance of Media Literacy. Each semester students in 8th and 7th grade have the opportunity to take part in this course about how to write scripts, create storyboards and use video production techniques. Students learn how to shoot commercials and how to appear to the right audience. This teaches the students about how Media Literacy affects their everyday life.

In a piece reminiscent of classic "60 Minutes," USC journalism student Matt Schrader exposes the dirty side of parking enforcement and street cleaning in downtown Los Angeles. Schrader found that while parking enforcement is out in droves ticketing cars, and mostly on street cleaning days (making the city $15,000 an hour!), the streets they're patrolling aren't even being cleaned. The best line of the piece is from a guy who got ticketed on one of those streets: "They have the manpower to ticket you, but they don't have the manpower to actually do the job."

Source: NPR. Date: December 30, 2010. Genre: Music. Sami Yenigun explores a new type of house music called dubstep. Known for its heavy bass, dubstep has began to take the music scene by storm. Derived from London, England, dubstep is a very new genre of music that falls into the electronic or house category. This type of music is particularly attracting to the younger crowds, mainly college level students. Artists such as Nero, Caligula, Skrillex and James Blake have become popular names in this new kind of music. Since it is so appealing to the younger and more energetic crowds, it got some of the biggest response at music festivals such as the Electric Daisy Carnival.

This article highlights the lack of media literacy education in Canada and the need for it. It recaps Canada's 4th annual Media Literacy Week, recounting the calls for improved economic education in this area. In an age where digital media is all around us, this makes a lot of sense for the youth population of Canada who commonly use and create the most digital media. Canadian Teacher's Fund President Mary-Lou Donnelly put it best by saying, "Media and digital literacy are life skills that should be included in the curriculum along with traditional literacy and numeracy skills. Students are not simply users but creators of media. As teachers, we must nurture this creativity while helping them to be engaged and responsible e-citizens." Media literacy education is definitely an important initiative and the fact that Canada is moving to integrate it into its education system is a good sign.
