The Qantara project is part of the Euromed Heritage programme, which hopes to contribute to mutual understanding and dialogue between Mediterranean cultures by highlighting their cultural heritage. It aims to encourage intercultural dialogue by supporting the preservation and promotion of the shared historical and cultural heritage of the Euromed region, through human, scientific and technological exchanges.

As my son marvels at the battle diaries, postcards, letters and photographs, and scrupulously unfolds war maps depicting the strategic battlelines in the fields of Gallipoli and the Somme, he surrenders to the pleasure of discovering history by his own hands. The touch, the sight, the smell of these items, each tells a story of their own and he takes his time in absorbing it all. Then in true Gen Y form, he reaches for the digital camera and begins to photograph the maps, crests, war pay books, menus of Christmas dinners - detailed and digital proof that he has, at last found, what he was searching for.

The Virtual Field Trip is a field trip that students and teachers take via the Internet.  A great benefit of this activity is that it utilizes technology tools to help students visualize and understand subject matter through exploration and active learning. It's also a great way to "travel" without leaving your classroom! Look for sites with QuickTime VR, which allows you to view panoramic views of your virtual field trip location.

The final videos can all be found here.  I hesitate to embed any in the post because I know I would be prone to pick the "best" one.  Please click on the link and randomly select one to watch! There are two pages of videos-and hey-leave a comment or a thumbs up!  I have to say, that after watching the kids make these, the final products just don't reflect the amount of work that is needed.  What I mean is that you shouldn't watch them and say "My kids could do that in a couple of days."  It took 360 minutes of class time to produce those 1-2 minute videos!! One thing I wished we had done is to write transitions so that the different videos linked together better.  I inadvertently led them to make videos on topics that come across as standing alone in time instead of being influenced and apart of other events and movements. Hi! My name is Sallie Ann. I was made in Gettysburg, PA, and I'm named after the mascot of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry from the Civil War. My job is to travel around the U.S. looking for Civil War battlefields or museums and schools learning about the Civil War. Along the way, I hope to teach kids more about the Civil War while also helping them to learn about using technology. I'll start out in Gettysburg, PA,and learn about the battle that took place there. My visit to you will last about one week, but before I leave, I hope that you will put something from the battlefield, museum or your school in my backpack so I can keep it as a memento of my visit.
