The History Engine: Doing History with Digital Tools | Academic Commons - 0 views

  •
'One of the primary goals of the History Engine project has been to design a research and writing exercise modest enough in its analytical scope and its length that it allows students to "do history" long before a senior seminar or capstone course. (Another important goal, discussed below, is to capture this research to amass a large history archive.) The History Engine is an online archive consisting of thousands of "episodes" written and contributed by undergraduates.'

Hi Keith - I work in the social studies department at Morristown High School and am good friends with one of your colleagues, Ryan Herbst. I'd like to get involved in any way possible... I read the article and visited the website for Electronic New Jersey and have years of experience using primary sources and technology in my everyday teaching. You can contact me at lindsay.henry@morristownhighschool.org. Thank you

Hi, Lindsay, I am so sorry this took so long to get to you, I've been up to my ears in work and other stuff. I just couldn't steal the five minutes to write to you. Sad, I know. :) Ryan was my protege and he's such a great guy! He's talked about you and Morristown H.S. and what a great place it is. I went to Randolph and all of my relatives on my Mom's side graduated from Morristown H.S. starting back in the 1930s! Lots of history there, and I love Morristown! When I get permission to do pilot testing I will ask if we can send you the link and let you try stuff out there and give us feedback. Also, if you ever want to come to Central and see what we're up to just ask!

1847 Pioneer Trek & Other Historical Reenactments via Twitter - 11 views

  •
In April 1847, a group of pioneers left Omaha, Nebraska and headed west. Their group consisted of 147 men, three women, and two children. Their journey would cover more than 1,000 miles, and cross the Rocky Mountains. This small group would pave the way for more than 70,000 people to make the same journey. On Monday, April 5, 2010 you can start following the same journey as volunteers reenact the 1847 Pioneer Trek via Twitter. More info at http://twhistory.org/1847-pioneer-trek/. The TwHistory project began in early 2009 with the first Twitter reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg over a period of several weeks. Later that year a high school class reenacted the Cuban Missile Crisis. TwHistory is based on the idea that historical reenactments can take place online and have positive effects for all involved. In school settings these virtual reenactments can increase engagement while providing opportunities for students to research personal journals and other primary source documents. In order to organize, study, and preserve these online reenactments we have created http://TwHistory.org
