A collection of source materials produced by a scientific expedition to Brazil in the mid-nineteenth century.

(I translated this post for my friends undestand more about History of Brazil.) Many people do not know this story but it is good that the issue to come out to debunk the myth that democratic opening in Brazil was "slow, gradual and safe" and that President Figueiredo is a great democrat. The opening was rather slow and gradual, but it was not safe. In addition to this attack, were charged as the other letter bomb at the headquarters of OAB and explosions of stands selling newspapers in the labor movement.

Um deles é o sequestro do Embaixador Suíço, que foi trocado por 70 prisioneiros que estavam sendo torturados nos porões da ditadura militar. Esta ação foi liderada por Carlos Lamarca da VPR - Vanguarda Popular Revolucionária. Durante 40 dias angustiantes os guerrilheiros mantiveram o embaixador Giovanni Enrico Bucher em cativeiro, aguardando a resposta dos militares. Dentro do "aparelho" clandestino também estavam a mulher de Lamarca: Yara Iavelberg e Alfredo Sirkis. É ele quem narra essa emocionante história no livro Os Carbonários.

Harvard's Widener Library is the repository of many scarce and unique Latin American pamphlets published during the 19th and the early 20th centuries.

This is a very interesting and unusual idea. Historians at Stanford have collected very specific and detailed information about historical events within short time frames and then produced graphic representations of these events that you can play over maps. It's very precise and perhaps too detailed for many high school level students to make sense of, however some of them helped show how historical phenomena occurred. Particularly chilling was the graphic showing slave purchases in the Rio slave market in the mid-C19th; you can see individual children being bought at specific times by specific people.
