Deep Thoughts Assignment - 37 views

Well, evidently I had used this site previous to this assignment, but not as in-depth. In the past, I have preferred to print out articles and information I have found on the internet because I need to highlight and make notes on what I read. This has been eye opening. I can truly see the benefits of using this tool. It is a way for me to save paper ( I always used scrap paper, but still!!) and still do what I feel comfortable with when it comes to online reading. It will still be something to get used to, but I do see myself moving this direction.
I would have to say that it was not all fun. I had some trouble when I went back to a page I had started making notes on and when I went to the Diigo address, my new changes were there, but not the old ones. Then, nothing was there. I had a few moments of pure and utter frustration. In the end I got the address to show what I had wanted, but that was after typing and retyping about four times!!! When I watched the video for Diigo as an introduction, it showed that you could in fact take a screen shot. I really think it would be nice if that would be automatic. It would be convenient to go to my Diigo site and be able to see each "Diigoed" site I have made in true form. It shows the annotations you made, but not in the context of the text. I guess what I am saying is, I see many benefits to the website, but there are a few things I think could be made easier. The toolbars are definitely a great feature. They are well on their way to make a very user-friendly site.
I added a recipe to Christina's Cooking School. I love the fact that you can join groups and add things. I know that there have to be other people out there searching for the same things I am searching for. This is a great way to come together in order to share common interests. I created a group for school librarians called School Library Programming. It is a way for school librarians to find out new and fresh ideas for their libraries. One of my topics involves encouraging recreational reading. This is something I am constantly struggling with. If the ideas are out there, why not share them!?! It is almost as if Diigo combines social bookmarking and blogging into one fantastic site.
There is great potential here and I am looking forward to continuing to use this site. Great experience!
Powerful Poems Assignment Fall 2011 - 90 views

I decided on the poem How to Read a Poem: Beginner's Manual by Pamela Spiro Wagner. Who knew they would have a poem for exactly what I was looking for. I truly appreciated the idea behind the poem. Unfortunately, I am not sure what I am going wrong, but I cannot find the link to my poem in the highlighted and post-it tagged page in the short web addresses that everyone else seems to have. I am not sure it if was my computer at work causing this problem or I just don't know what I am doing. Nonetheless, you will be able to see my work at the following address:

I think this poem might be a good one for Holly too! I, like Holly, am not always looking for a deeper meaning. Funny thing, this poem says "Do not assume meanings hidden from you: the best poems mean what they say and say it." That is exactly what I am looking for. I have to say, I could read Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein over and over again and never tire of it. His poems say exactly what they mean to say!!
I especially liked the first line: "First, forget everything you've learned." The poem suggests reading a poem a day and that pretty soon you will be reading and understanding more than just one poem a day. This particular poem used some great analogies. Even saying to "Treat a poem like dirt". Now, it goes on to say that it is rich in nutrients and will one day grow wonderful vegetables...Just like poetry can grow your mind.

I will be getting married on June 29, 2012 and I thought it only fitting to do some exploring on the topic. I created a list titled Fiesta 7. It contains bookmarked wedding websites as well as other websites highlighted with information I feel is important to know through the process. This is what I have come up with so far.

I had never experiemented with Diigo before this. It turns out I had an account, but didn't take advantage of it. It really is a tool I can see myself using. I have lots of different bookmarks in my internet browsers, but I think sometimes they get lost among each other. Diigo offers a way to tag certain spots, as well as highlight the information you find relevant. I am a person who appreciates organization and this would be a way to keep information organized on my computer. So much information is available to you, but to be quite honest I think I often forget what I have found. Organizing using lists is another great feature. You can keep all of your bookmarks in one spot, but then sort even further using the lists. I also thinking tagging the items is helpful. You can search just your bookmarks with similar tags.
I had a little trouble at first learning the ropes. I use Google Chrome at home and IE at work and the toolbars are different. I also think it was difficult because I didn't have access to certain things at work because I didn't have the rights to download. Ah the joys of protecting our students - it sometimes prohibits us from being able to offer our students something that could potentially be a huge help to them in general, but also when researching.
I would like to take some time when all is said and done this semester and revisit Diigo. I think there is even more available than what I have explored so far.

This is a place for school librarians to share thoughts and ideas. The first three topics I have posted are: Book Talks, Library Lessons, and Encouraging Recreational Reading. School librarians have the opportunity to post sites they have found on any of the three topics or add their own. This is a way for others to share what they have found. The site is set to public, so you shouldn't have to join.
