Gates Foundation is now rolling out funding for researchers to produce peer-reviewed quality studies on MOOCs. It looks like professors around the world (as far as down south in Australia) are keen to start working on this new tech trend in education.

Fascinating article about backlash to a non-profit working with school districts to integrate student data sources. Raises lots of pertinent issues beyond student data: intersection of business, foundations, and school districts; parent reactions to educational technology; districts going down the rabbit hole of tech contracts without a clear sense of what they'll get....

A shortage looming? Survey finds that less than 50% of k-12 schools have a CTO.

The addition of the "+" in the acronym incorporates communication and digital media technologies in the traditional four areas of study." Curious what others will think about these predictions.

A perspective on MOOCs I haven't heard: tech-positive, yet skeptical that there's anything new or interesting about them.

Is the rise of technology the downfall of humanities? The article also talks a bit about new tech tools used in humanities classes on page 2.

I thought it was interesting to note the shift in focus and interest from a broad "knowledge-based" education to a "career readiness" and skills-based education over the past 10 or so years (probably due to the recession) from students AND higher ed. institutions. Do you think this shift is from student demand for more "practical" majors in STEM fields or policy/institution push to enroll more students in STEM majors?

Tried to post in reponse to Ryan's article. Any thoughts about the implementation or potential success of this project? Will this degree program impress employers or carry the same clout that Georgia Tech's in person master's programs in comp. sci. do?

1) I love love love infographics. 2) Surprising data here. Is it that teachers overestimate themselves, or we underestimate teachers?

3) Oops, posted before I read the fine print: "WeAreTeachers conducted an online survey...The data reported is representative of teachers who completed the survey and not projectable to the population of US school teachers." Bad on me; irresponsible of them.

An interesting array of tools (I wasn't aware of some of them) for flipped classrooms from blogs to LMSs , YouTube..

What are some possibilities for e-books in math? Is it realistic to believe this will entice students to read more? How interactive are these e-books?

Technology literacy is projected to arrive in k-12 schools in 2012.
