Knewton Strikes A Deal To Power Pearson's Digital Education Courses | TechCrunch - 1 views

  •
The partnership of Knewton and publisher Pearson will give a boost to digital textbooks and online course materials. The objective is to present educational content personalized to each student's learning pace and abilities. This deal will give it access to millions of students for the first time. Knewton uses alogrithm to personalize education, and the Pearson deal will give it access to millions of titles to create the network effects necessary for its algorithms to be adopted.

This is HUGE! School for One will have a run for its money against the breadth and depth of content that Pearson has that can be tied to individualized learning through this type of algorithm and logic! Its a nice place for Pearson (and me) to be!

Pearson gets into the MOOC action by creating a search engine for content.

Pearson makes an interesting business move by recognizing and organizing Open Educational Resources. I often wonder how the questions of academic integrity, quality, etc will be answered in the marketplace.

Pearson's take on MOOCs - 2 views

  •
Kind of like Professor Dede's post about McGraw-Hill's interest in e-learning, here is a blog post from Pearson about MOOCs. I think his take (Jeff Borden, one of their VPs) is pretty accurate, in that we need a version 2 where it's not as lecture-based as version 1. I would guess that they are working on their own "version 2" solution (perhaps with Knewton?).

In a couple of weeks a bunch of Pearson people are spending a couple of days at MIT Media Lab learning about the future of learning. Specifically they are interested on how to capitalise on technology and how to make education of all kinds for all ages more widely accessible, more affordable, more effective. Should be interesting, the lab will be doing demos all day of all the projects in the Media Lab.

Maria, do you know if this event is open to the public, or more a "sponsor-day" event? I would love to go!
  •
Not sure if it's public event, I only know about it because I will be helping with the App Inventor demo. I'll let you know once I know more info.

Pearson talks mobile disruption in education, games and publishing - 1 views

  •
"The revolution in education is not something that's going to happen tomorrow. It's starting to happen quite a while ago, when in Nigeria and Kenya kids in schools would use their mobile phones to subscribe to information," says Alina Vandenberghe, head of mobile and gaming at Pearson.

Boston publisher enters new chapter in textbooks - The Boston Globe - 3 views

An article about the shift towards computer-based teaching systems.
  •
Thanks for sharing Jennifer. I currently work for Pearson and worked on many of the "digital paths" that the article refers tot. I am seeing first hand the shift in priority towards customized personal learning through digital technologies. Pearson's first attempt at integrating technology into their curriculum was a good start but I think the future of Pearson products will employ a lot of the strategies we've been learning in class from intelligent tutoring systems to fully integrated learning platforms. Very exciting shift for the educational publishing industry!

Apple Introduces Tools to (Someday) Supplant Print Textbooks - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  •
"Apple said electronic high school textbooks from its initial publishing partners, including Pearson, McGraw-Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, would cost $15 or less. That is much cheaper than print textbooks, some of which can cost over $100". woo hoo!
  •
I can explain the business model to you if you'd like that shows how the $15 price point is feasible in what turns out to be an almost $40 million dollar textbook investment! Just let me know!
  •
I would be definitely interested :-)
