Collaborative Agenda - @NDI Unconference on #ElecTech - Using Tech in Elections - 0 views

  •
I was reading about using tech in elections and I ran across Hackpad. I had never heard of Hackpad, and this is a question for the teaching staff: Might this be a good option to have more of our class conversations in one place? I'd be curious to know how you think it compares as a discussion platform.

Indian Govt plans to give 25 million mobile phones, 9 million tablets free - 0 views

I wonder what the basis for this distribution is and wether the plan has been thought through to ensure it meets the goals it set out in the first place or if it is a gimmick for the forthcoming elections. This s a lot of money for a country like India.

Manit, I believe you answered your own question. I bet it is about the forthcoming elections.

Apparently my simulation idea about having students take on roles as career professionals has already been done. A drove of statistical consultants (the students) are helping the mayor (NPC), get re-elected. The most interesting Worked Example is Modern Prometheus, where students learn about literature and writing through a MUVE.

Thanks for sharing Prof. I know of many educators who have actually started playing WoW just so they could understand their students' world a little better. I wonder how many principals would have supported them openly though.

Chinese schools quietly discard controversial Web filter | Technology | Reuters - 0 views

  •
Some Chinese school officials have gone against the wishes of the national government and removed Internet filtering software becuase it "has strong conflicts with teaching software we need for normal work." On the other hand, many public schools in the US not only tolerate draconian filtering policies, but elect to implement such policies on the local level! Why are we willing to sacrifice educational opportunities for some imagined sense of security about our children? If you haven't looked over the "Unmasking the Digital Truth" Wiki, I highly recommend that you do so. It discusses some of the common misconceptions about Internet filtering in schools and associated laws. (http://unmaskdigitaltruth.pbworks.com/)
