Key to common core standards is assessment, especially formative assessments to help guide students in mastering common core standards.    This is an area where I believe that technology can help in the classroom.

Common Core and what the U.S. has learned from other countries - 0 views

  •
We had a discussion in class a month back or so about standards and international performance versus U.S. One of the talking points was, what can the U.S. learn from other countries (or more appropriate, what is the U.S. willing to learn from other countries). Some people mentioned that the U.S. tends to show an aversion to learning from other countries, but this article notes that the Common Core State Standards is actually based on best practices from other leading countries like Singapore, China, and Finland. So maybe we're not as stubborn as we seem...

  • "I want the Department to become an engine of innovation, not a compliance monitor," said Secretary Duncan. "We are looking to you - the districts and nonprofits - to unleash your creativity and build the next generation of education reform."

Social Isolation and New Technology - Pew Research Center - 1 views

  • Americans are not as isolated as has been previously reported. People's use of the mobile phone and the internet is associated with larger and more diverse discussion networks.
  • Our survey results challenge the finding that an increasing number of Americans have no one with whom they can discuss important matters. However, our findings support existing research that suggests that the average size and diversity of core discussion networks have declined.
  • ownership of a mobile phone and participation in a variety of internet activities were associated with larger and more diverse core discussion networks.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Contrary to the assumption that internet use encourages social contact across vast distances, we found that many internet technologies are used as much for local contact as they are for distant communication.
  • Social networking services, such as Facebook, provide new opportunities for users to maintain core social networks.
  • Contrary to the argument that internet use limits people's participation in the local community, local institutions and local spaces, our findings show that most internet activities are associated with higher levels of local activity. However, we find some evidence that use of social networking services (e.g., Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn) substitutes for some level of neighborhood involvement.
  • internet use, and in particular the use of social networking services, are independently associated with higher levels of network diversity.

Interesting report contradicting some previous findings about the link between technology and social isolation.

Berkery Noyes Releases Education Industry M&A Report For Third Quarter 2012 - 0 views

  •
A financial / investment perspective of the Education industry is offered in this report. I think the interesting thing is this section: "With the implementation of the Common Core standardized curriculum, the focus on content is becoming less about differentiation and more about delivery through emerging technology platforms," stated Mary Jo Zandy, Managing Director at Berkery Noyes. "Interactive assessment tools that measure student progress, particularly in the quantitative disciplines, will thus become even more important in K-12 education as schools aim to meet specific testing benchmarks."

Education Week: Educators Craft Own Math E-Books for Common Core - 1 views

  •
This article describes the efforts that individual teachers in Utah are making to rewrite textbooks to be aligned to the standards that they are teaching in class. These teachers are writing eBooks and getting a lot of positive feedback from state officials because of the use of technology to meet student needs. They did not have a textbook that fit their integrated approach to teaching math, which they aligned to CCSS, so they took the matter of creating a textbook into their own hands. I think this is a prelude to how textbook creation is changing as a result of technology. Teachers are now able to construct books in a way that fit exactly the objectives they are covering and meeting there students where they are at.

AR Aero - Strategic Plan - 0 views

  • The Vuzix AR Education Group video eyewear products are the first educational media tools that provide individuals with total flexibility to receive, send, and review training and detailed product information through an increasingly ubiquitous web-enabled communication device. This revolutionary approach assures that the most current training and educational information will always be accessible to those who need it where they need it, a necessity for businesses increasingly operating on a global scale.
  •
I was speaking with Chris yesterday and we agreed that it was going to be the entertainment industry that would pioneer this technology. At this point, it looks as if Vuzix core market and strategy for growing their AR library is business (training) and academia. The fact that you can see through the lens but ALSO see the 'broadcast' image is huge. Yesterdays AR demo would have been soooo much more immersive had we been able to keep one eye on the R (reality...cars, appraoching hornets, etc) and one I on the AR.
