Def. not on par with 'The Mentalist', but I can tell when I kid is going to explode or is hiding something or is in need of a lerning intervention.     Do any of you know 'LINE'? as of last months, 80mn users globally (36mn users in Japan) and its pace of growth is exceeding that of any other types of social media in the country (Facebook, Twitter, etc). They target 1) users who have smartphones but not PC, 2) those who are interested in communication emotions effectively through ''emoticons'. If some people are concerned about how twitter/facebook/texting would have adverse impact on children language skill, let's talk about the implication of this thing if kids learn to communicate just by selecting emoticons (whose designs and variety are great by the way) and sending that to each other. I still have LINE on my PC but seeing this rapid growth in my home country concerns me a bit.

Especially fascinating is the discussion (2/3 of the way down) of languages that use a geographical, rather than egotistical, method for describing direction and relative position. (For example, the cup is resting on the north side of the west table in the southern room of the house.) How would a person with this type of view of the world experience a virtual environment? Also interesting implications for kids growing up with social media. Do new technologies impart habits of mind that affect the way kids learn?

    That's WAY too young to "babysit". We have been learning in Joe's class this week that parents using media as a means of parental substitution can have deleterious effects on a child's emotional development and ability to internalize good media messages and reject dangerous media messages. Giving babies tablets when they are that young reeks of lazy parenting, in my opinion. Unless the tablet becomes that "Transitional Object" that we are reading about in Turkle/Resnick's class....Gotta love when all of the class readings converge into similar ideas!
