Hernia repair surgery is also known as herniorrhaphy or hernioplasty and it is used for the treatment of a hernia. There are three types of hernia surgery – Open Hernia Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, and Robotic Surgery.

    How to treat a hernia?

    Treatment of Hernia

hernia is generally treated with a surgical procedure. There are three different types of hernia surgery: Open Hernia Repair Surgery, Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Surgery, and Robotic Hernia Repair Surgery.

How is Open hernia repair surgery performed?

In open hernia repair surgery, your doctor makes one large incision to access the hernia site. Then the surgeon pushes the hernia back and fixes the weak spot with hernia mesh (optional) and sutures. Many people get discharged from the hospital on the same day and the complete recovery time is about three weeks. Your doctor will advise avoiding lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercise for about six weeks after hernia surgery.

How is laparoscopic hernia repair surgery performed?

Laparoscopic hernia surgery also known as minimally invasive hernia surgery is performed with help of a laparoscope and other special surgical tools. In Laparoscopic hernia surgery, your doctor makes a few small incisions close to the hernia site to insert a tube with a camera on top (Laparoscope) and fix the hernia. Recovery time in laparoscopic hernia surgery is generally faster and a patient can resume normal activities a week early than with open surgery.

In laparoscopic hernia surgery, your doctor inserts a harmless gas (Carbon dioxide) to inflate the abdomen this helps the surgeon to view inside the abdomen. Once the hernia is fixed, your doctor places the hernia mesh to strengthen the abdominal walls and close the incision with sutures. One of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery is small three to four scars on the abdomen as compared to one large. You will feel less pain after surgery and quickly recover in a couple of days.

In both surgeries, your surgeon uses general anesthesia.

How is robotic hernia repair surgery performed?

Robotic hernia surgery also uses a laparoscope to perform the surgery like laparoscopic hernia surgery. Your surgeon makes three to four small incisions close to the hernia site, inserts the laparoscope, inflates the abdomen, and monitors the surgery on a screen connected with a TV.

Robotic surgery is slightly different from laparoscopic surgery. In robotic surgery, the surgeon uses a console in the operating room and uses surgical instruments through the console. Robotic surgery can also be used for a small hernia, weak spots, and now it can also use to reconstruct the abdominal wall.

There is another difference between laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery is the use of the robot that can also display 3D images of the inner section of the abdomen as compared to 2-dimensional images of laparoscopic surgery. Robotic surgery helps the surgeon to easily place sutures and mesh inside the abdomen.

    Exercise for Hernia

Daily exercise helps strengthen abdominal muscles close to hernia, helps in reducing the hernia symptoms and you can maintain a healthy weight to avoid further complications.

In a study, it is observed that people who are obese and undergoing ventral hernia repair, followed an exercise regime. These people had fewer complications after surgery.

You need to be a little cautious about the exercises like weightlifting or that put pressure on the abdomen since these exercises can add extra pressure to the area of the hernia. It may increase the hernia bulge.

If you notice any lump related to a hernia, it is always recommended to consult the physician about the exercise. They can guide you about the exercises you can add to your fitness regime and help to reduce the symptoms of hernia.

    How to prevent a hernia?

An induvial can prevent a hernia from growing. There are several factors that can cause a hernia such as an existing inherited condition or surgery in past.

Besides, you can make a few changes in your lifestyle to help reduce the risk of a hernia. This includes activities that put a strain on your abdomen area.

A few tips for hernia prevention:

    • Maintain healthy body weight.

    • Daily exercise that strengthens your abdominal muscles.

    • Avoid lifting heavy weights that put extra pressure on your abdomen.

    • Stop smoking.

    • Try not to strain during bowel movements or during urination.

    • Take a high fiber diet to prevent constipation.

    • Consult your doctor if you’re not feeling well and you have a persistent cough.

    Outlook

A hernia is a medical condition when tissue or an organ swells through a weak spot of muscle. To fix the hernia your doctor may recommend a hernia repair surgery.

Laparoscopic hernia surgery is the most recommended surgical procedure to fix hernia laparoscopically. Open surgery is another option for patients.

Hernia repair surgery is vital if the hernia is incarcerated. Hernia surgery can stop the hernia from becoming strangulated. Adhere to your doctor’s instructions to plan for your surgery. Many people get discharged from the hospital the same day after the surgery.
