Access to pharmacy care has significantly declined over the past two years, particularly in the most deprived communities, due to a rising number of pharmacy closures and reduced opening hours. A new report released by the Company Chemists' Association (CCA) indicates a net loss of almost 64,000 pharmacy weekly opening hours between September 2022 and June 2024, equivalent to 3.4 million hours of pharmacy access per year. Of the total hours lost, nearly two-thirds (62 per cent) were due to pharmacy closures, while 38 per cent resulted from reduced opening hours. According to the CCA report, England has lost over 1,200 pharmacies since 2015, largely attributed to NHS funding cuts. Years of flat funding have also forced many businesses to reduce opening hours to 'balance the books.' Out of the 10,487 pharmacies that were trading in June 2024, over a quarter had reduced their opening hours in the previous 18 months.

Pharmacy contractors continue to grapple with profit pressures despite many reporting significant sales revenue increases, according to Hutchings Consultants' England Pharmacy Market Update 2024. The report emphasises that gross profit margins are under considerable strain due to factors such as rising wholesale drug costs, the dispensing of certain drug lines at a loss, reduced drug tariff reimbursements, and ongoing medicine shortages. These challenges have led to a growing number of pharmacies reporting substantial declines in their profit margins this year. For instance, Cohens Chemists reported a £5.7 million loss in the last financial year, even as sales reached £253 million. Similarly, Day Lewis, the UK's second-largest independent pharmacy chain, experienced a 5.9% sales increase driven by growth in prescription dispensing, over-the-counter sales, and pharmacy services, yet faced a 32% drop in pre-tax profits due to heightened administration costs, which included inflation-driven increases in staff, energy, utilities, and rent. The average profit margin has declined to 33% in 2024, down from 34.4% the previous year.

In response, Santosh Sahu, Founder and CEO at Charac, has emphasised the need for technological reform to address "the interoperability gap between pharmacists and GPs". Meanwhile, Community Pharmacy England (CPE) has expressed concerns that protests and violent disorder in various towns and cities across England may impact the ability of community pharmacies to operate.

The King's New Year Honours List 2025 has been announced, recognising unsung heroes who have made outstanding contributions to their communities across the UK. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer thanked the recipients, saying: "Each and every day, ordinary people go out and do extraordinary things for their communities.

Community pharmacy continues to play a crucial role in providing patients with access to essential NHS care through the Pharmacy First service, especially when other parts of the healthcare system are difficult to reach. According to the Company Chemists' Association (CCA), the sector delivered an estimated 65,000 Pharmacy First consultations in the week leading up to Christmas, marking a 10 per cent increase compared to previous weeks. At a Rowland's Pharmacy in Warsop, Mansfield, pharmacist Taseta saw a notable rise in the number of patients seeking consultations for sore throats, particularly among school children and staff. The pharmacy also experienced an increase in urinary tract infection (UTI) consultations, while earache cases remained consistent. Taseta explained the surge, noting, "Lots of people do not want to be ill over Christmas so [they] wanted easy and quick access to care, which we could do in the pharmacy." They also saw more patients engaging with the Pharmacy Contraception Service, which Taseta attributed to time constraints at the local surgery.

Marking Pharmacy First's first anniversary in England, the Company Chemists' Association (CCA) has called on policymakers to expand the service, highlighting that there's still "significant room for growth." In a report released today, the association estimates that expanding the service could free up 40 million general practice (GP) appointments every year - more than four times the current potential - and around a tenth of all GP appointments. In its current form, the service is expected to free up more than 9 million GP appointments annually. The CCA has recommended expanding the criteria and treatments available for the existing seven conditions and introducing new conditions. David Thomas, owner of LT Chemists in Newport, will replace Raj Aggarwal OBE as the next National Pharmacy Association (NPA) board member for Wales, following an uncontested election this month. Following the conclusion of a nomination process last week, Baldev Bange, Aisling O'Brien, Sehar Shahid, and Sanjay Ganvir have been re-elected to the Board, representing areas of England and Scotland. Ashley Cohen, Sanjeev Panesar, Sukhi Basra, Salim Jetha, Olivier Picard, and Nick Kaye continue their terms without needing to stand for election this time. They still have another two years to run on their terms as board members. Two board positions remain open. The nomination process is ongoing in Northern Ireland, while in England, five NPA members are contesting the remaining seat, which is open to any member with up to five pharmacies. Hustings for the remaining board position in England will take place shortly and a ballot for this position will take place later this month, according to a statement from NPA.

Raylane Pharmacy Group has expanded its portfolio by acquiring Evans Pharmacy in Worcestershire. With this new addition, the independent community pharmacy chain has increased its total number of branches to 10. Located in the centre of Malvern Link in Worcestershire, Evans Pharmacy dispenses approximately 10,000 items per month. The acquisition follows the retirement of the previous owner, Philip Hawkes, who had managed the business for over a decade. The sale was facilitated by Christie and Co through a confidential process, and the transaction price remains undisclosed. Commenting on the deal, Carl Steer, director-pharmacy at Christie and Co, said: "The sale represents a perfect addition to an already successful group for Raylane Ltd. "The instruction proved popular, and the completion represents another sale for Christie and Co in a record year for pharmacy sales."
