Weight Loss Drugs May Reduce Risk of Substance Disorders | Pharmacy Biz News 2025 - 0 views

  •
A comprehensive cohort study has shed light on the benefits and risks associated with weight-loss drugs, offering valuable insights for clinical care and future research. Published in Nature Medicine on 20 January 2024, the study found the use of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs)-used to treat diabetes and obesity-associated with a reduced risk of substance use disorders (including alcohol, cannabis, opioid and stimulant use disorders). Weight-loss drug use was also linked to decreased risks of psychotic disorders, seizures, neurocognitive disorders (including Alzheimer's disease and dementia), coagulation disorders, cardiometabolic disorders, infectious illnesses and several respiratory conditions. However, the use of GLP-1RAs was not without risks, as researchers identified an increased risk of gastrointestinal disorders, hypotension, syncope, arthritic conditions, nephrolithiasis, interstitial nephritis, and drug-induced pancreatitis associated with their use. The analysis, utilising the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs databases, compared 215,970 GLP-1 RA users with patients using sulphonylureas (n=159,465), DPP4 inhibitors (n=117,989), SGLT2 inhibitors (n=258,614), or a composite of the three (n=536,068).

Autism Spectrum Disorder: How To Deal With it - 0 views

  •
An autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, interact with others, and process information. There is no one-size-fits-all for people with ASD, as each experiences symptoms differently. While some people with ASD may be nonverbal, others may speak fluently but have difficulty with social interaction. Most people with ASD need specialized educational and behavioral intervention early. There is no medical cure for ASD, but treatments and therapies can improve symptoms and help people with ASD lead fulfilling lives. If you or your child has just been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), it's normal to feel a range of emotions. You may feel relieved to finally have a diagnosis and explanation for your or your child's symptoms. Or you may feel overwhelmed, worried, or even angry about the diagnosis.

Stay Informed: Aripiprazole Side Effects & Gambling Risks - 0 views

  •
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has reminded healthcare professionals prescribing aripiprazole to alert patients about its possible side effects, following a rise in the number of reports of gambling disorder associated with the drug. Patients taking aripiprazole, which is used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, are at risk of developing unusual urges or cravings that they cannot resist, including behaviours such as addictive gambling, excessive eating or spending, or an abnormally high sex drive. The regulator has received 69 reports of gambling or gambling disorder suspected to be caused by aripiprazole in the last 14 years via the Yellow Card Scheme, out of which 32 were received between 1 January and 31 August this year. Alison Cave, MHRA Chief Safety Officer, said: "The number of reports for suspected gambling and other impulsive behaviours associated with aripiprazole are small in comparison to the frequency with which it is prescribed, but the consequences for any patient developing these conditions can be significant."

Valproate Alert: Men's Fertility Risks Revealed - MHRA Caution - 0 views

  •
The Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has cautioned men on valproate to talk to their healthcare professional about their treatment, if they want to start a family in the next year. The warning came after a new study, commissioned by the European Medicines Agency, suggested that children fathered by men who took the anti-seizure medicine in the three months prior to conception may be at higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. Around five in 100 children born to fathers treated with valproate around conception were diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder, compared to three in 100 children whose fathers were taking other antiseizure medicines (lamotrigine or levetiracetam). However, the risk is believed to be much smaller than the risk associated with valproate in pregnancy.

Urgent Call for Sickle Cell Awareness: PDA Report 2024 Highlights Pharmacists' Knowledg... - 0 views

  •
Despite being the most common genetic disorder in the UK, sickle cell disease (SCD) remains significantly underfunded and underserved compared to other genetic disorders, according to a new report published by the PDA BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) Pharmacists' Network. The report also reveals that the disease is poorly understood within the healthcare system, including amongst pharmacists, pharmacy students, and foundation pharmacists in the UK. It emphasises the urgent need for increased awareness, funding, and improved healthcare access for SCD amongst these healthcare professionals. "A lack of education about SCD within the wider healthcare community, including pharmacy, greatly contributes to disparities in care. "Though the importance of SCD education for pharmacists and allied healthcare professionals is acknowledged, it remains unclear whether this topic is adequately addressed within the MPharm curriculum," the report said. The report further noted that in the absence of explicit guidance from the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and without more comprehensive education surrounding SCD embedded within the pharmacy curriculum, pharmacists and future pharmacists may remain "ill-prepared to manage patients with this complex condition." As per the report, sickle cell disease is the most prevalent genetic disorder globally, impacting millions, including around 17,000 people in England.

Wheelchair : Handicap Products: Cerebral Palsy Information - 0 views

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of conditions caused by medical abnormalities in the development of a fetus or the early life of a child. These lead to damage or delayed development in the brain. The disorder is permanent and, though it does not worsen with age, the level of functionality of a person with cerebral palsy varies widely: in some cases, effects may be very minor, while in others, movement is impaired to the extent that a wheelchair is required. Common complications associated with CP vary by the type of CP disorder but can include vision problems, seizures, learning disabilities, and issues speaking, writing, and performing other tasks related to motor control. Cerebral palsy is the focus of a large amount of medical research every year. Though much of this research deals with younger patients, more and more attention is being paid to CP sufferers as they age and seek fuller opportunities and more integration with the rest of society. Living with CP is a daily challenge, but paths to a richer and more fulfilling life are being found. There is not, and may never be a "cure" for CP, but greater understanding by clinicians and the daily success stories of those who overcome their limitations are making. •
The European Union's health regulator on Friday said it had recommended granting a conditional marketing authorisation for a gene therapy by Australian drugmaker CSL Ltd and partner uniQure N.V. , to treat haemophilia B, a rare bleeding disorder which is caused by genetic anomalies. About one in 40,000 people are affected by the inherited disorder, caused by a gene mutation that hampers the body's ability to make clotting protein factor IX. If approved, the treatment, branded Hemgenix, will be the first gene therapy in the European Union for the condition that is usually treated by regular injections of factor IX, the European Medicines Agency said. CSL had acquired exclusive global rights to Hemgenix in May last year from uniQure N.V.
