Canada Post added the first all-electric step vans in Canada to its fleet.With zero tailpipe emissions, each electric truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 tons annually. The windshield design provides nearly 180-degree visibility, the low-floor design allows easy loading/unloading and the noise level is nearly non-existent.

The hydraulic hybrid system uses stored hydraulic energy instead of diesel fuel to power the truck during waste collection stops. A hydraulic launch assist system, also known as a parallel hybrid, is bolted onto the truck's existing power train and connects using an electronically controlled transfer case.

According to Smith Electric Vehicles, A123's battery technology will be first implemented in the Smith NewtonTM truck, an all-electric, 7.5 ton (16,535 GVWR)-15 ton (33,000 GVWR) vehicle that has been commercialized globally. Smith's customers include Frito-Lay (a division of PepsiCo), Staples, Coca-Cola, Sainsbury's and Dairy Crest, as well as the U.S. Marine Corps.
