  • Google Shared Spaces offers several mindmapping applications. The one I like best is simply called Mind Map Gadget and can be found on:http://googlesharedspaces.appspot.com/gallery/app?app_id=16636
  • Mind Map Gadget allows you to create a shared space, i.e. students can collaborate on the mindmap, which you can embed into Moodle or any other website plus it lets you work directly in that website. The gadget might not be as impressive as Bubbl.us or Mindmeister, however it does offer some advantages in addition to remaining editable after embedding.

    Many of the participants in the UW-Stout E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate Program use Google Sites to create their e-portfolios.  The portfolios are created and used throughout the program. During the practicum, when students become teachers by teaching in one of our graduate classes, they also refine and polish their portfolios. Ultimately the online portfolio becomes a job search tool that helps our graduates show a potential employer what they know.

Google Translate Adds Conversation Mode -- InformationWeek - 11 views

  • Conversation Mode has arrived. Conversation Mode is a user interface for mobile devices designed to facilitate a real-time conversation between two people speaking different languages.
  • "Google Translate will translate your speech and read the translation out loud. Your conversation partner can then respond in [his or her] language, and you'll hear the translation spoken back to you."
  • There are some limitations. The current version supports only English-Spanish translation in Conversation Mode. And rapid speech or a regional accent may be misinterpreted by Google's systems. But these are problems Google is working to overcome.

  • Perhaps the most strategic option, albeit a long-term one, is to infiltrate schools and colleges of education. Most school administrators and teachers never had to take a course, or even part of a course, that introduced them to what constitutes a high-quality school library program.

    A great overview of Lance's research into the effectiveness of libraries.  He answers the question: Do school libraries or librarians make a difference?  His answer (A HUGE YES!) is back by 14 years of remarkable research.  The point is proved.  But this information remains unknown to many principals and superintendents.  Anyone interested in 21st century teaching and learning will find this interview fascinating.

  • Many of them, however, start out in the Google Privacy Center, which isn't just for telling you about Google's privacy principles. Lots of things can be found here, but the most important are under the Privacy tools subhead on the left side. Admittedly, I had never visited my own Dashboard before my conversation with McPhie, but I should have—and so should you. When you hit up the Dashboard while logged into your Google account, you can see a list of every Google product you have an account with, as well as the information each one has stored about you.

    Information Literacy Games: Finding Kermit This blog post features a great video of Kermit the frog singing It Ain't Easy Being Green. It follows up with an explanation of a search game that can be used with the whole class in a lab or on an individual workstation. It's part of a free series of online information literacy / information fluency games available from 21cif.com. Finding Kermit was the inspiration for one of the first Internet Search Challenges created by Dr. Carl Heine. The task is to track down a picture of Kermit ready for graduation in the least amount of time. The search game is embedded on the page so you can try it without going to the main site. Many teachers use this as a whole class lab activity. Put up a search challenge and then it's off the races! Most of these games were developed for middle and high school students. Adults find them challenging as well.
