Over efficiënt wordt gesproken wanneer een proces goed verloopt. Efficiënt gaat over processen. Effectief gaat over doelmatigheid. Om een voorbeeld te geven: het is efficiënt om een vervelende boodschap per e-mail te versturen. Een druk op de knop en klaar ben je. Het is daarmee niet effectief. Even bij iemand langslopen om vis à vis met de juiste aandacht een vervelende boodschap te bespreken is niet efficiënt maar wel effectief. Het meest optimaal is om effectief en efficiënt met elkaar te combineren. Maar dat is niet altijd mogelijk, blijkens voornoemd voorbeeld. Voorwaarde om een afweging tussen efficiënt of effectief te kunnen maken is een hoge mate van zelfbewustzijn en het in een split second kunnen toetsen aan je verantwoordelijkheden en de doelen die je wilt bereiken. Dat is je koers. Anders geformuleerd: je kunt dus heel efficiënt jezelf bezig houden met domme dingen ("Things" zo je wilt).
