    The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center is offering a funding opportunity for a new research project to improve understanding of how climate and land use changes influence fisheries production at the global scale. Specifically, these changes could affect water temperatures, lake levels, and water quality which, in turn, influence fisheries habitat. Forecasts of these human-induced perturbations indicate continued, if not accelerated, changes in coming decades, yet natural resource managers may not be prepared to cope with these changes because of limited understanding of how climate and land use changes influence inland fisheries yield.

    Scientific research, along with operational support of that research, is the principal activity of the U.S. Antarctic Program in Antarctica. The National Science Foundation's Antarctic Sciences Section (ANT), Division of Polar Programs (PLR), fosters research on globally and regionally important scientific problems. In particular, the Antarctic Sciences Section supports research that expands fundamental knowledge of the region as well as research that relies on the unique characteristics of the Antarctic continent as a platform from which to support research. Antarctic fieldwork will be supported for research that can only be performed or is best performed in Antarctica. The Antarctic Sciences Section strongly encourages research using existing samples, models, and data as well as research at the intersection between disciplines.

    In collaboration with the university science community, NCAR scientists focus on fundamental research aimed at improving our ability to predict meteorological, air quality and space weather hazards and increasing our understanding of the variability in and changes to the Earth's climate system at regional and global scales. These research themes are enabled by NCAR-operated facilities such as two highly modified aircraft (a C-130Q Hercules and a Gulfstream-V); a petascale supercomputing center in Cheyenne, Wyoming; and state-of-the-art community models, including the Community Earth System Model (CESM), the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM). Partnerships with researchers in complementary fields, such as hydrology, cryospheric science, oceanography, terrestrial biology, public health and social sciences, to name a few, broaden NCAR's activities beyond the traditional atmospheric and geospace sciences.     The Geosciences and Education and Human Resources Directorates are partnering to advance and develop understanding of learning environments that build upon the rich interdisciplinary resources emerging from polar investments. To that end, the Division of Polar Programs (PLR), the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) and the Division of Research on Learning (DRL) encourage proposals that will leverage the extensive National Science Foundation (NSF) investment in polar sciences and infrastructure, and STEM education research and development, to promote an informed citizenry and the next generation of polar scientists. The goal of this solicitation is to attract research proposals that advance a fundamental, process, and systems-level understanding of the Arctic's rapidly changing natural environment and social and cultural systems, and, where appropriate, to improve our capacity to project future change. The Arctic Sciences Section supports research focused on the Arctic region and its connectivity with lower latitudes. The scientific scope is aligned with, but not limited to, research challenges outlined in the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee (https://www.nsf.gov/geo/plr/arctic/iarpc/start.jsp) five-year plans. Swedish research projects are likely to support efforts outlined in the Swedish Road Map for Polar Research. U.S. investigators should propose studies consistent with the Arctic Research Opportunities solicitation to be performed from the ODEN working in the eastern Arctic Ocean or other areas outside of the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas that are typically serviced by the USCGC HEALY and R/V SIKULIAQ. Proposals that contribute to the Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) are also appropriate. Please contact Dr. Neil Swanberg to discuss ideas prior to submission and for the most up-to-date information on cruise plans.

Resolving this uncertainty is crucial to developing management strategies to recover endangered sturgeon and to prioritize management actions in the large river ecosystems where they reside. Current genetic markers and analyses are insufficient to adequately characterize hybridization between these species and research is needed to identify pathways forward to rapidly develop cost-effective genetic tools.

    Funds are available to participate in a study of wetland-associated breeding landbirds and shorebirds of conservation concern (SOCC) in Anchorage, Alaska, including Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). Applicants must be able to: 1) work with Audubon Alaska to recruit, train, and supervise citizen scientists to monitor wetlands in Anchorage parks and on JBER recreational lakes for use by SOCC; 2) compile and summarize SOCC survey data collected by citizen scientists on the use of JBER recreational lakes and other wetlands; 3) recruit, train, and supervise university students to participate in Anchorage and JBER SOCC surveys; 4) supervise students to compile JBER wetlands spatial data and work with USFWS biologists to develop spatial models of habitat use by SOCC, which will be compared to data from Anchorage wetlands; 5) accomplish and coordinate data analysis, report writing, and manuscript preparation on wetland bird habitat use, trends, and annual movements with USFWS and JBER biologists.
