CUAHSI's Let's Talk About Water (LTAW) Program uses a simple film screening and panel discussion format to catalyze conversation between water science experts and the public. LTAW events have been a well-received and effective educational forum in which complex water issues are addressed through the use of film, followed by a moderated panel discussion related to the content of the film. By keeping the language simple and straightforward, the audience leaves with a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the complex water issues facing society.

The goal of this program is to detect, prevent, eradicate, and/or control invasive plant species to promote resiliency, watershed stability, and biological diversity on federal, state, or private land.

DARPA Defense Sciences Office (DSO) wants to identify and pursue high-risk, high-payoff research initiatives across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines and to transform these initiatives into important, radically new, game-changing technologies for U.S. national security. The current overarching office themes include accelerating scientific discovery, exploring fundamental limits, and expecting the unexpected. In support of this mission, the DSO Office-wide BAA invites proposers to submit innovative basic or applied research concepts in one or more of the following technical areas: Mathematics, Modeling and Design; Physical Systems; Human-Machine Systems; and Social Systems. Each of these areas is described below and includes a list of example research topics that highlight several (but not all) potential areas of interest. Proposals must investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances. DSO is explicitly not interested in approaches or technologies that primarily result in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

Research Grants are given to qualified individuals or teams who are members of the NSS by the time the proposal is submitted for research-support in cave-related branches of study. Funds are available to participate in a study of wetland-associated breeding landbirds and shorebirds of conservation concern (SOCC) in Anchorage, Alaska, including Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). Applicants must be able to: 1) work with Audubon Alaska to recruit, train, and supervise citizen scientists to monitor wetlands in Anchorage parks and on JBER recreational lakes for use by SOCC; 2) compile and summarize SOCC survey data collected by citizen scientists on the use of JBER recreational lakes and other wetlands; 3) recruit, train, and supervise university students to participate in Anchorage and JBER SOCC surveys; 4) supervise students to compile JBER wetlands spatial data and work with USFWS biologists to develop spatial models of habitat use by SOCC, which will be compared to data from Anchorage wetlands; 5) accomplish and coordinate data analysis, report writing, and manuscript preparation on wetland bird habitat use, trends, and annual movements with USFWS and JBER biologists.

This research funding opportunity is being jointly issued by the NOAA OAR Office and Weather and Air Quality (OWAQ) and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). It seeks to obtain new knowledge of the meteorological and infrasound aspects of tornadoes in the southeastern U.S. and the social and behavioral aspects of the public response to tornado forecasts and tornado events. This new knowledge will improve our ability to understand, forecast and warn the public of tornadoes and elicit appropriate responses to mitigate damage, injuries, and loss of life.

With this Dear Colleague Letter, NSF is providing advance notice of a change in the eligibility of prospective applicants to the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to allow the community to plan accordingly. Effective as of the 2017 competition (Fall 2016 deadlines), NSF will limit graduate students to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. No change is made to the eligibility of undergraduates, of bachelor's degree holders without any graduate study, or of individuals who have had an interruption in graduate study of at least two consecutive years.

USGS Earthquake Hazards Program (EHP) annual Announcement for assistance to support research in earthquake hazards, the physics of earthquakes, earthquake occurrence, and earthquake safety policy. This activity is authorized by the Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act of 1977.

Leidos will match high-scoring, unfunded National Institutes of Health (NIH) proposals with private biomedical foundations and/or industries seeking to fund promising research. Foundations will have access to peer-reviewed research proposals that directly relate to their funding priorities, industry will have access to a rich pipeline of early stage and translational research proposals that align with its priorities, while applicants with strong research proposals will be provided with a second opportunity to secure funding. Scientific research, along with operational support of that research, is the principal activity of the U.S. Antarctic Program in Antarctica. The National Science Foundation's Antarctic Sciences Section (ANT), Division of Polar Programs (PLR), fosters research on globally and regionally important scientific problems. In particular, the Antarctic Sciences Section supports research that expands fundamental knowledge of the region as well as research that relies on the unique characteristics of the Antarctic continent as a platform from which to support research. Antarctic fieldwork will be supported for research that can only be performed or is best performed in Antarctica. The Antarctic Sciences Section strongly encourages research using existing samples, models, and data as well as research at the intersection between disciplines.

NSF hereby solicits proposals to manage and operate one or more components of the National Geophysical Observatory for Geoscience (NGEO). NGEO would comprise a distributed, multi-user, national facility for the development, deployment, management, and operational support of modern geodetic, seismic, and related geophysical instrumentation and services to serve national goals in basic research and education in the Earth sciences. In addition, NGEO would support mission goals of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for global real-time earthquake, volcano, and tsunami observations, early warning and hazard mitigation efforts, nuclear test ban verification, precise positioning and timing, and other Earth observation needs. NGEO would also support commercial and international groups that depend on NGEO capabilities for an increasingly wide range of applications.

The purpose of this project is to yield protocols for the presence/absence eDNA detection of the S. hineana and C. diogenes under a range of environmental conditions. It will provide the information critical to evaluating the probability of false negatives or positives, and the understanding the general role that eDNA detection will play in conserving this endangered insect.

Notice of Intent to award a Cooperative Agreement to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute (UAF-GI) in volcano monitoring, and in performing geological and geophysical studies related to volcano monitoring and volcanic hazard assessment in Alaska and the Aleutians. This work is in cooperation with the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center (NCCWSC) requests a three year cooperative agreement for a project titled: "Assessing the impact of future climate on Hawaii's aquatic ecosystems." NCCWSC synthesizes and integrates climate change impact data and develops tools that the Department of Interior's managers and partners can use when managing the Department's land, water, fish and wildlife, and cultural heritage resources.
