Landscape Change Detection with National Inventory and Monitoring Networks in support o... - 0 views

    he objectives of this Agreement are to further development of change detection research using an existing methodology developed at Oregon State University by Robert Kennedy termed LandTrendr. The two networks both utilize this approach as part of their respective long-term monitoring programs and rely on its development as technology changes. In addition to LandTrendr, OSU has also developed a companion stand-alone program called TimeSync which is crucial during the validation of the LandTrendr-delineated disturbances. This tool also needs to be upgraded to be compatible with current Windows operating systems. This agreement would allow the I&M networks to work collaboratively with OSU to ensure I&M networks receive the specific tools they need to continue their respective long-term monitoring programs without interruption. Oregon State University will also facilitate easier use of LandTrendr for the public and other researchers because this service is being moved to cloud computing which will greatly increase compute speed, decrease the amount of data storage necessary at the network offices, and remove the need for high level computing within the office. Geoarchaeology at the Osotuoy Unit - ARPO - 0 views

    (1) Sample earthworks at the Osotuoy Unit (minimally Mounds A and B, other locations dependent upon access). Sampling will be done using a geoprobe DT22 sampling system which extracts soil cores. Cores will penetrate from the current mounds surface into non-cultural contexts beneath the mounds. It is estimated that 12 cores ranging from 4 to 10 meters would be required to sufficiently sample Mounds A and B; (2) Describe and interpret soil cores using standard geoarcheological terminology; (3) Extract samples for dating from viable contexts and submit samples to appropriate laboratories; (4) Provide ground penetrating radar of the appropriate type to identify internal structural features of the mounds, operate the equipment in a manner that will provide optimal results, and interpret the data to understand the construction process involved in the mound's creation; (5) Produce a final written report that details the research questions, methods used, findings and results, and conclusions; (6) Provide all project records (e.g., field notes, maps, photographs, analysis data) to NPS for curation

    GeoPRISMS (Geodynamic Processes at Rifting and Subducting Margins) Program investigates the coupled geodynamics, earth surface processes, and climate interactions that build and modify continental margins over a wide range of timescales. These interactions cross the shoreline and have applications to margin evolution and dynamics, construction of stratigraphic architecture, accumulation of economic resources, and associated geologic hazards and environmental management. The GeoPRISMS Program includes two broadly integrated science initiatives (Subduction Cycles and Deformation and Rift Initiation and Evolution), linked by five overarching scientific topics and themes, where transformative advances are likely to occur in the decade 2011-2020, and where a focused scientific program could be most effective. These overarching science topics include 1) Origin and evolution of continental crust; 2) Fluids, magmas and their interactions; 3) Climate-surface-tectonics feedbacks; 4) Geochemical cycles; and 5) Plate boundary deformation and geodynamics. Each of the initiatives has identified primary sites for focused investigations, as well as thematic studies that will complement primary site studies.
