The U.S. Department of Energy Fossil Energy Crosscutting Research Program serves as a bridge between basic and applied research by targeting concepts that offer the potential for transformational breakthroughs and step-change benefits in the way energy systems are designed, constructed, and operated. DOE is seeking financial assistance applications that propose concepts and technologies that will make significant and cost-effective progress toward achieving these step-change benefits for electric generating units and industrial plants that use fossil fuel.

This program element follows on from the A.41 The Science of Terra and Aqua (NNH09ZDA001N-EOS) in Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Science (ROSES)-2009 and A.28 The Science of Terra and Aqua (NNH13ZDA001N-TERAQ) in ROSES-2013). The present solicitation provides an opportunity for scientists to undertake studies responsive to NASA, the Science Mission Directorate's science objectives (https://science.nasa.gov/about-us/science-strategy), and the NASA Earth Science Research objectives (https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science) and to provide answers to NASA's Earth Science Research questions ((https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/big-questions) through the use of data and derived products from Terra and Aqua and their measurement sensors, as well as the Suomi NPP satellite and its measurement sensors. It represents a continuation of the research aspects of the EOS and Suomi NPP Instrument Teams for these satellites, and emphasizes opportunities for scientists to analyze and exploit EOS and Suomi NPP data. It also provides an opportunity to develop new products by combining multi-sensor and multi-platform data, or by developing innovative approaches to data retrievals. This program element offers investigators an opportunity to conduct integrative research using the data and products resulting from these satellites (Terra, Aqua, Suomi NPP). Additionally, this program element welcomes the opportunity to fuse multiple sensors and data streams, including Terra, Aqua, and Suomi NPP, to conduct interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary Earth System Science.

Problems facing world governments, businesses, civil societies, and the international scientific community are increasingly interconnected in nature and rarely fall cleanly within the confines of a national border. In recognition of the fact that global problems require international inquiry to generate effective solutions, and in pursuit of its goal to enable strong international research collaborations, CRDF Global is currently accepting proposals from U.S. researchers who will collaborate with Russian teams in basic research in one of the following three scientific areas:

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is interested in receiving proposals for its Young Investigator Program (YIP). ONR's Young Investigator Program (YIP) seeks to identify and support academic scientists and engineers who are in their first or second full-time tenure-track or tenure-track-equivalent academic appointment, have begun their first appointment on or after 31 December 2012, and who show exceptional promise for doing creative research. The objectives of this program are to attract outstanding faculty members of Institutions of Higher Education (hereafter also called "universities") to the Department of the Navy's Science and Technology (S&T) research program, to support their research, and to encourage their teaching and research careers. Proposals addressing research areas (as described in the ONR Science and Technology Department section of ONR's website at www.onr.navy.mil) which are of interest to ONR program officers will be considered. The NRA covers all aspects of basic and applied supporting research and technology in space and Earth sciences, including, but not limited to: theory, modeling, and analysis of SMD science data; aircraft, scientific balloon, sounding rocket, International Space Station, CubeSat and suborbital reusable launch vehicle investigations; development of experiment techniques suitable for future SMD space missions; development of concepts for future SMD space missions; development of advanced technologies relevant to SMD missions; development of techniques for and the laboratory analysis of both extraterrestrial samples returned by spacecraft, as well as terrestrial samples that support or otherwise help verify observations from SMD Earth system science missions; determination of atomic and composition parameters needed to analyze space data, as well as returned samples from the Earth or space; Earth surface observations and field campaigns that support SMD science missions; development of integrated Earth system models; development of systems for applying Earth science research data to societal needs; and development of applied information systems applicable to SMD objectives and data

For this project a geophysical survey will be conducted to locate and record covered fossil trackways and lakeshore features. This is an initial survey to test the capabilities of geophysical equipment and gather data and images for public sharing and resource management and protection. The survey will take place within the western half of the monument at a highly concentrated track site. A test survey was conducted in April 2017 for a two meter by two meter area that successfully allowed buried prints to be detected. The information gathered from this project will provide the knowledge to conduct an extensive survey in the future of the western shorelines of Monument.

The Rare Earth Elements (REE) Program is focused on developing technologies for the recovery of REEs from coal and coal by-products. The program offers a pathway to improve the economics and reduce the environmental impact of a domestic coal-based REE value chain. The Department of Energy is looking to develop new technologies or technology advancements that result in improvements in technical, environmental, and economic performance of existing technologies to recover rare earth elements from domestic U.S. coal and coal by-products.

BLM Colorado's National Conservation Lands encompass approximately one million acres, or one-eighth of all BLM land in the state.

Geophysical Sub-surface surveys employ Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to detect cultural material buried beneath the surface, without having to dig holes, which further disturb the resources, to collect this data. Furthermore, GPR surveys have recently been used to locate human burials, which has been immensely important for park managers and planner that have ground disturbing projects in the works. Because of the effectiveness of the technology and methodology for identifying buried archaeological deposits and features many parks are looking to employ this technology in their parks to build a greater understanding of where archaeological resources are that we want to avoid and also in some cases to study. To make this research affordable and to maximize the cost-effectiveness of the fieldwork these parks have agreed to coordinate their efforts to bring a specialist in to conduct the GPR surveys.

The purpose of the Request for Information is to seek information from stakeholders necessary to formulate a program that will culminate in the design, construction, and operation of two large-scale pilots which focus on transformational coal technologies that represent a new way to convert energy to enable a step change in performance, efficiency, and the cost of electricity compared to today's technologies.

This proposed undertaking would utilize focused ion beam microscopy investigations to provide a more in depth analysis of wildfire effects. Samples of rock coatings will be taken from varied fire settings to identify which fire settings produced the worst fire damage. The results will be used to select panels for the most urgent treatment and to determine appropriate treatment measures.

Proposals are solicited to support needs of the marine seismic research community that are currently provided by the specialized seismic research vessel R/V Marcus G. Langseth. The vessel is owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University (LDEO). NSF has determined that the current operational model is unsustainable and, with this solicitation, seeks proposals that provide comparable access to marine seismic capability through innovative approaches to R/V Marcus G. Langseth use or by other means.

Langseth use or by other means. The successful proposal will be administered as a Cooperative Agreementoverthe five-year period of performance.

The purpose of this program is to collaborate on studies, projects and activities. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will work with a partner(s) on mutually beneficial projects to help guide the BLM in the development of the resource management plan for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and help develop best management practices for Prehistoric Trackways National Monument. In the past the BLM has worked with a CESU to support paleontological inventory, study basalt lava flows and produce information for wayside exhibits about geology.

(1) Sample earthworks at the Osotuoy Unit (minimally Mounds A and B, other locations dependent upon access). Sampling will be done using a geoprobe DT22 sampling system which extracts soil cores. Cores will penetrate from the current mounds surface into non-cultural contexts beneath the mounds. It is estimated that 12 cores ranging from 4 to 10 meters would be required to sufficiently sample Mounds A and B; (2) Describe and interpret soil cores using standard geoarcheological terminology; (3) Extract samples for dating from viable contexts and submit samples to appropriate laboratories; (4) Provide ground penetrating radar of the appropriate type to identify internal structural features of the mounds, operate the equipment in a manner that will provide optimal results, and interpret the data to understand the construction process involved in the mound's creation; (5) Produce a final written report that details the research questions, methods used, findings and results, and conclusions; (6) Provide all project records (e.g., field notes, maps, photographs, analysis data) to NPS for curation

he objectives of this Agreement are to further development of change detection research using an existing methodology developed at Oregon State University by Robert Kennedy termed LandTrendr. The two networks both utilize this approach as part of their respective long-term monitoring programs and rely on its development as technology changes. In addition to LandTrendr, OSU has also developed a companion stand-alone program called TimeSync which is crucial during the validation of the LandTrendr-delineated disturbances. This tool also needs to be upgraded to be compatible with current Windows operating systems. This agreement would allow the I&M networks to work collaboratively with OSU to ensure I&M networks receive the specific tools they need to continue their respective long-term monitoring programs without interruption. Oregon State University will also facilitate easier use of LandTrendr for the public and other researchers because this service is being moved to cloud computing which will greatly increase compute speed, decrease the amount of data storage necessary at the network offices, and remove the need for high level computing within the office.
