Sixty years ago today the guns that thundered round Fort Sumter began the third and greatest modern civil war fought by English-speaking people. This war was quite as full of politics as were the other two--the War of the American Revolution and that of Puritan and Cavalier. But, though the present Chronicle never ignores the vital correlations between statesmen and commanders, it is a book of warriors, through and through.

In preparing this book it has not been the purpose of the author to write a complete historical sketch of the Michigan cavalry brigade. Such a history would require a volume as large for the record of each regiment; and, even then, it would fall short of doing justice to the patriotic services of that superb organization. The narrative contained in the following pages is a story of the personal recollections of one of the troopers who rode with Custer, and played a part-small it is true, but still a part-in the tragedy of the civil war.

This Jamaica, West Indies, genealogical research site contains transcriptions from various documents for 1655 to 1947 (and a few to 1993), including nineteenth century Jamaica Almanacs (which list property owners and civil and military officials), the complete text of "Monumental Inscriptions of the British West Indies" written in 1875 by J. H. Lawrence-Archer, Jamaica Directories for 1878, 1891 and 1910, extractions from Jamaican Church records, Civil Registration and Wills, and excerpts from newspapers, books, and other documents. It includes images, a Glossary, Historical Background, and other Utilities to aid in putting this information into focus. New information is added constantly, thus creating a virtual genealogy library for those researching Jamaican families. Here you will come across people from all walks of life: large landowners and paupers, slave and free, knights, gentlemen, laborers, seamen, soldiers, lawmakers and lawbreakers. They all left their imprint in the Jamaican records. Facts come to light, and skeletons jangle in the closet. The colors of people mentioned in the Registers, and the variety of people found here, reflect the island motto, "Out of Many, One People."

Lowcountry Africana, sponsored by the Magnolia Plantation Foundation of Charleston, South Carolina, will be entirely dedicated to records that document the family and cultural heritage of African Americans in the historic rice-growing areas of South Carolina, Georgia and extreme northeastern Florida, an area that scholars and preservationists have identified as a distinct culture area, home to the rich Gullah/Geechee culture. The Lowcountry Africana website will be a treasure trove of primary documents, book excerpts and multimedia for exploring and documenting the dynamic cultural and family heritage of the Lowcountry Southeast. The Rare Books & Special Collections Department has been merged into the Genealogy & Local History Department as part of the Main Library for the 21st Century reorganization.

The Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy is located in the The New York Public Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Library. The Milstein Division collects materials documenting American History on the national, state and local level, Genealogy, Heraldry, Personal and Family Names, and Flags. The Milstein Division bears the responsibility for maintaining the excellence of a body of materials that has traditionally been one of the strengths of The Research Libraries. The Astor Library's holdings of United States history on the national, state and local level were enriched by the acquisition of the George Bancroft Collection, purchased by the Lenox Library. Later significant additions were the Ford, Emmet and Myers Collections. Complementary holdings in the Rare Books and Manuscripts & Archives Division, the Print Room and other divisions of The Research Libraries enhance the resources of The Irma and Paul Milstein Division of United States History, Local History and Genealogy.

THE NATIONAL YEARBOOK PROJECT
RootsWeb is host to the National Yearbook Project:

National coordinator Judy White has organized the project by location.
Most submissions are from America, but foreign contributions are
welcome; Judy is especially trying to build items from Canada and the
British Isles.

Contributions can be individual photographs, indexes, and
transcriptions. A single page or an entire book can be submitted, as
well as links to external sites. Graduation and commencement programs
are also welcome items.

One of the highlights of the project is the classified ads. There are
people looking for yearbooks and others selling. Maybe you'll get
lucky and find a match.

U.S. SCHOOL YEARBOOK DATABASE
Ancestry.com has digitized yearbooks into the U.S. School Yearbook
database. If you don't have a subscription, try your local library for
access. To date, there are more than 1 million names indexed. The
collection includes books from middle school, junior high, and high
school.

Ancestry.com encourages submissions, so if you are inclined, send a CD
with images scanned at no less than 300 dpi. It should include the
front and back covers, as well as all interior images. If you are
unable to send a CD, contact them for other arrangements.

Switching from 'image' view to 'PDF' view enables much better results with Detroit City Directory 1928-29, which has very fine print.

Books from the University of Michigan collection, scanned for preservation purposes. At present, there are 28,378 volumes in the General Collection. Collection includes 1899 Business and Professional Directory for Detroit and surrounding communities, and 1928-29 Detroit City Directory.
