...over the last few months, conflicting claims have emerged about how malls fit within Twin Cities society. ("#Itsmymall!" "No, #itsmymall!") The seemingly audacious protest by the #blacklivesmatter movement and subsequent reaction by the Mall of America and the Bloomington prosecutor illuminate the complex relationship that shopping malls have as public and private spaces. Like it or not, they are simultaneously massive private companies and rough, if degraded, facsimiles of Gruen's public sphere.

Third space concept inversed to mean in-office refuges, an effect of what Bob Fox, publisher of the industry magazine Workspace Design, calls the Google philosophy to "give its employees a city."

millenials are eager for third space experiences at retail food outlets, e.g., grocery stories and restaurants gen-Xers also interested; baby boomers, less so Whole Foods comedy videos on YouTube showcase it as a spot for socializing and matchmaking

I sometimes wonder if museums might create a separate entrance for 'third place' side experiences... is there a way to take some less valuable square footage - and turn it into something unique... and build some buzz around the experience

Here's a way for museums to invite the local community in...offering their unused/unscheduled spaces

Interesting description of what the availability of a "third space" might have meant to a young person as he was growing up:  a space that Jordan could have used to talk about how he felt while on his journey. It could have been used as a platform for Jordan and his peers to discuss what he was comfortable and uncomfortable with.

What might the office building of today look like, or be used for, tomorrow?

Acres of unused space in conventional office buildings may be transformed into hotel rooms, classrooms, theaters or retail uses, architects and urban planners say.   And museums? Exhibition spaces? Pop-up?

Smartphones "enable" us to stick around longer in public because they're now an extension of our private spaces. (and free WiFi too!)

This article suggests to me that senior centers need to be re-thought. Seniors want to be in the thick of things even if they are just sitting with friends over luke-warm coffee. Enter the museum's third place...

Interesting thought piece as we get ready for CAM and the 3rd Spaces session.  Are museums more like the library as 3rd Space or the one described at the end of the article?

PlaNYC 2030 - a cool future plan for NYC. Of note for my interest is the chapter on Parks and Public Space, but others may find other chapters of interest, especially in terms of how they envision the city 15 years into the future.

This map shows the location of every independent coffee shop in Brooklyn and the walking-shed community associated with it. Independent coffee shops are positive markers of a living community. They function as social spaces, urban offices, and places to see the world go by. Communities are often formed by having spaces in which people can have casual interactions, and local and walkable coffee shops create those conditions, not only in the coffee shop themselves, but on the sidewalks around them. We use maps to know where these coffee shop communities exist and where, by placing new coffee shops, we can help form them. We applied two steps to generate the data displayed by the map. First, we used the Google Places API to locate all coffee shops in a given city. Second, for each point in the map we queried the walking route and distance to its nearest coffee shop using the Google Distance Matrix API. In the final map the colored areas represent a region which is walkable to a specific coffee shop (within one kilometer or 0.7 miles). The intensity of color at each point indicates its distance from its corresponding coffee shop.

Cafes, then, are both a product of modernity and, through the space they provide for new ideas to develop, a driver of modernity.

Maybe an idea for museum play spaces and children's galleries where many different people touch and wear items?

THE HERITAGE COUNCIL is hosting workshop to teach communities how to create a pop-up museum in vacant spaces to inject life back into their towns and draw in the tourists.
