Turning Voice into Music and Light| Daily tous les jours - 0 views

  •
Inspired by a kids' game of broken telephone, where the inputs and outputs don't always exactly match, Hello, Hello is a poetic messaging system inside a luminescent arch that turns peoples' voices into a lyrical spectacle. Created by Daily tous les jours, an emergent field of practice that combines interactive art, storytelling, performance, and urban design to create unexpected experiences that bring strangers together in a spirit of play, cooperation, and creativity, the permanent public art installation is part of a broader vision for "Joy Experiments" - interventions designed to foster community through play.

this is the site of Mitchell Joachim, PHd at MiT ... netx has very good intuitions and plays far with formal designs...Terreform ONE [Open Network Ecology] is a nonprofit organization and philanthropic design collaborative that integrates ecological principles in the urban environment. The group views ecology in design as not only a philosophy that inspires visions of sustainability and social justice but also a focused scientific endeavor. The mission is to ascertain the consequences of fitting a project within our natural world setting. Solutions range from; green master planning, urban self-sufficiency infrastructures, community development activities, climatic tall buildings, performative material technologies, and smart mobility vehicles for cities. These design iterations seek an activated ecology both as a progressive symbol and an evolved artifact. Terreform is a winner of the Infiniti Design Excellence Award - History Channel City of the Future competition.

The Vertical Farm Project - Agriculture for the 21st Century and Beyond | www.verticalf... - 3 views

  • Advantages of Vertical Farming Year-round crop production; 1 indoor acre is equivalent to 4-6 outdoor acres or more, depending upon the crop (e.g., strawberries: 1 indoor acre = 30 outdoor acres) No weather-related crop failures due to droughts, floods, pests All VF food is grown organically: no herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers VF virtually eliminates agricultural runoff by recycling black water VF returns farmland to nature, restoring ecosystem functions and services VF greatly reduces the incidence of many infectious diseases that are acquired at the agricultural interface VF converts black and gray water into potable water by collecting the water of evapotranspiration VF adds energy back to the grid via methane generation from composting non-edible parts of plants and animals VF dramatically reduces fossil fuel use (no tractors, plows, shipping.) VF converts abandoned urban properties into food production centers VF creates sustainable environments for urban centers VF creates new employment opportunities We cannot go to the moon, Mars, or beyond without first learning to farm indoors on earth VF may prove to be useful for integrating into refugee camps VF offers the promise of measurable economic improvement for tropical and subtropical LDCs. If this should prove to be the case, then VF may be a catalyst in helping to reduce or even reverse the population growth of LDCs as they adopt urban agriculture as a strategy for sustainable food production. VF could reduce the incidence of armed conflict over natural resources, such as water and land for agriculture

but it seems sometimes in a 70s old project .. with no references to new architcture, next scripted one.. beautiful in some parts, unrealistic in others.. in fact this is an inspiring one. not a model... but to discuss on, it is a good beginning

Integrating Biology into Architecture - 0 views

  •
Architecture has traditionally incorporated a number of fields in its complex processes. From mathematics to the arts, architecture involves a highly varied skill base. But one area that has not been incorporated into architecture is biology. Until now. In recent years, the correlation between biology and architecture has aligned and the two are increasingly become more intertwined. In light of increasing carbon emissions and the rise of the green building sector, architects are becoming increasingly more innovative in their design schemes.

Modern Maintenance Unit Solutions: Functional & Aesthetic - 0 views

  •
Towers are marketed as iconic places to work, live, visit and simply experience. It is important that they keep up their appearance. But the maintenance and cleaning of tall buildings can be a complex and costly business for building owners. Conversely, the integration of large and unsightly building maintenance units (BMU) can potentially compromise the architectural design integrity. Modern BMU designs combine the integration of efficient, cost effective cleaning and maintenance procedures with a solution that maintains the aesthetic ambitions. The cleaning technology options are numerous; from traditional abseiling techniques to self climbing cradles and davit arms, through to monorail systems and BMU machines.

Designer Airport Home Away From Home - 0 views

  •
Helsinki's Vantaa airport is taking the saying 'making yourself at home' to heart with the interior design for their newest travellers' lounge. No matter how hard airport designers try to make these international, heavy trafficked areas romantic and luxurious, there is no doubting the dread that most of us feel on a 6 hour lay over or extended visit. While there can be no denying the luxuriousness of this interiorly designed space, what the designers have cleverly done is steer away from the clinical coolness of traditional airport lounges and thrown a knowing look back towards creature comforts. The aptly named 'Almost @ home' lounge features interior aspects that have been chosen to most correctly reflect a Finnish, or any, home.

Building From the Ground Down - Green Building Digs In - 0 views

  •
When moving towards a sustainability goal in the architecture and construction industry, eco-technologies are often the first choice that builders and designers make. While these additions are successful in decreasing, or even eliminating, excess carbon emissions expelled during the construction or running stages of a building's life, there are much simpler organic processes that can be used to simply decrease a reliance on brown energy use. Orientation Planning is a prime example of a simple, zero technologically driven sustainable building concept. Through the careful positioning of a building, its reliance upon technologies, green or otherwise, to control the interior climate can be dramatically reduced, or even eliminated entirely.

Critics Hit Melbourne CBD Expansion - 0 views

  •
The announcement that Melbourne is set to receive one of its largest redevelopments on record has set the tongues of both the nation, and the globe, wagging. Finding even further international acclaim last year when it was deemed the World's Most Liveable City, Melbourne has seen a massive population surge, topping 85,000 new residents a year, causing both industry and government leaders to put together in a scheme which aims to perform the dual function of expanding and refurbishing the central Melbourne area. Much like Sydney's Barangaroo project, this latest CBD expansion is too large and high-impact to go unnoticed, for both positive and negative reasons.

Safety and Public Buildings - 0 views

  •
While feeling safe and secure is a universal need, the strategies through which this need is met have changed over time and across cultures. Recent natural disasters and terror attacks have contributed to a heightened level of interest in how best to protect public buildings and associated structures from natural or man-made events. Within Australia, the National Construction Code (NCC) defines types of building and associated structures, in addition to providing technical advice for their design and construction. The NCC covers such matters as structural integrity, fire resistance, access and egress, services and equipment, and energy efficiency as well as aspects of health and amenities.

realXtend - 0 views

  • The number of interesting applications for the near future is great. A truly functional virtual reality platform has to cope with a number of different use cases from city planning to elderly care or teleconferencing software. Virtual reality’s strongest points are interpersonal communications applications and human-technology interfaces; the true value of the extended web is in connecting the real world with the new user interface. Top 5 applications for realXtend (in our own opinion): Virtual meeting tools Reduce travel costs and enhance quality over traditional telephone and video conferences Collaboration and social interaction Imagine your team members sharing applications and thoughts while they are geographically distributed, but virtually co-located. Advanced user interface Complex applications, such as home automation control, are easier to understand and use when they are presented in 3D applications. Collaborative Games realXtend is an ideal platform to make novel multiplayer game titles. It features many aspects that do not exist anywhere else. Collaboration, co-building and dynamic worlds offer rich possibilities for entirely new kinds of games. Visualisation technologies Visualize enormous amounts of data and make it comprehensible for the end user. For example, building information models and architect's drawings can be presented as a 3D world, where users can walk around and visualize how things are going to look.
  •
based on the realxtend engine... 3d virtual worlds are to be complete parts of an architecture project: more than just showing moidels, it will implied people and also partners (industrails too) to achive and conceive the next projects in architecture !

reality check: Imagination, fantasy, creativity, play and the 'real world' - 0 views

  •
but to read ... some convergence . Disengagement from the 'real world' is a common criticism of the discipline of architecture. With architects serving only 10-15% of the population and an even lower number in housing design, it is not difficult to understand the reasons for this critique. Conversely, architecture is also about imagination, creativity, play and fantasy-all activities promoted in architectural education, particularly design studio. Through this tutorial, we will try to understand whether architecture needs to touch base with the 'real world'. We will investigate what this mean for architecture and what is needed for imagination, fantasy and play to become tools in the search for a sustainable future.
