High school science teachers and their best and brightest science students are invited to participate in the Forty-seventh Annual Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, to be held March 20-22, 2011, at the Penn State University Park campus. The purpose of the symposium is to seek talented youth and to encourage the development of their scientific interests and abilities. Outstanding science students may present either a paper or poster or simply attend the presentation sessions. Scholarships will be awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. The first- and second-place winners will be invited to present their papers at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. Lodging and most meals are paid by the Pennsylvania Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, so the registration fee is only $105 per student or teacher participant. Deadline to apply is February 4, 2011.

An article describing how a gifted teacher has begun using Solitaire Chess (a new game from the ThinkFun company) with her students. She says that this game works best with students who are already familiar with chess or with very small/ one-on-one lessons for students who are just learning the rules. She's using the hands-on version, but there's also an iTunes app available. A video of one of her 5th grade students playing is included.
