Yes we should compile everything here in diigo. We should find articles statements and take a snapshot using the diigo capture tool. We should opt for someone for the team to submit everything soon.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/01/090128092341.htm I found this link to interesting article called, Is Technology Producing a Decline in our Critical Thinking and Analysis. I especially like the part when it talks about the decline of people reading for pleasure now days. If you want me to elaborate more on the next article I find I will. I bookmarked the article to my diigo page as well and highlighted the one paragraph.
Maybe we should decide what are strong points are against the statement and each person compiles information on different reasons. So then they are strong opinions. Does that sound like a game plan? What does everyone think we should do? Group effort!!
I have no idea. There is only three of us on here, but I guess we can't worry about that right now. Let's just start getting to work on this and divide the work load so it's not overwhelming.
Probably should just add it here don't you think? Then have our opinions here as well. Then at the end post our final paragraph in the main discussion page?
Ok. Lets gather some articles in Diigo and compile them here. I'll put my permalink for it in here when I have gathered enough. We should try to make them look similar though. How about what point we are making to disprove the sentence and the reasons why under it.
I'm doing my go to as we speak then I will be available til 6pm. I have to work until 12:30am central time So I can finish anything when I get back. That's just in case I don't hear from anyone til 6pm. Megan if there is anything besides research you would like me to do please let me know. I will be posting again anything I find interesting after my go to training!
How about someone finds the research and puts it on Diigo and gives the permalink and then the other person makes a document using the research to write the statement?
Hi Team. My computer was out of commission today. I missed go to training because I had an issue with my computer. I spent the day taking care of that. I am good now. So you guys decided to add here I will do the same also this evening. If you guys need me to research anything specific let me know also. I see you guys want to break up the search. I will check after 6:30 pm EST so you can leave info.
How about you two get research (and please say the point your making towards it) with your permalink on here and I'll do the statement. Sound good? I'll need it ASAP
If you could do research on how most people can't write cursive anymore so the can't sign their name on checks, because of texting and Facebook lots of teens can't interact well face to face, and that math can only be done these days with a calculator handy. Thought those were some good ones. Please try to get those to me tomorrow morning and I'll get it in by noon. Thanks!
Awesome! I hope I'm not being bossy. For me the sooner I get something done the better. Less I have to worry about and I want us to get a good grade. If you need to contact me post on the discussion board for Team B in our Student Portal. I'll see that the quickest.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/26/tech/web/impact-technology-handwriting/index.html This article is very interesting and hit home for me personally. I currently do not have the best hand writing, let alone good cursive writing. I always hated writing in cursive in school and thought, what was the point? Now reading this article and it points out that there is a decline in some states to even require teachings of the cursive hand writing in public schools. I personally wish I could have kept up on my cursive skills because it does show professionalism and makes you a better hand writer. The article also points out, what if we lost electricity? We would have to write everything manually. This article also pointed out another article, "A Nation of Adults who Write like Children." http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/26/tech/web/impact-technology-handwriting/index.html It made a statement that said "If we stop teaching hand writing in second grade, we will have a generation of second grade hand writers." I feel like I get judged on my hand writing because it is poor, even though I know what I'm talking/writing about.
http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2012/05/02/does-texting-hinder-social-skills/ This also hits home for me because I'm a person who likes to confront a problem head on. I like to talk things through and not text because I believe that it disconnects people. People aren't able to resolve conflicts today like adults because they are hiding behind these technologies. The article even states how romantic relationships are affected because a couple gets into an argument and it's all done by texting, what?? I've seen this as well and to me it looks childish. I can't say that I haven't had it out with someone over text but it was because they wouldn't pick up the phone and they would only text me. I had no choice but to get my feelings out through texting. You can take things so easily out of context when it comes to typing anything because you can't see how the person really feels. There's always a tone in someone's voice or the way they look at you while talking. The article also states how we are in our "alone" time. When it comes to technology, we can talk to people all the time and with that, we lose the attachment to some people. I have these articles saved in my diigo account with the highlighted areas. I wasn't sure exactly how you wanted everything posted.
This article shows how a firm lost money because the employees lack literacy skills and a portion of the company is dependent on spell checkers. Imagine how much more funds would have been lost. Some employees also had someone else check their work. I understand that this tool is available to help people but in this day and age we rely on technology too much. People are in such a trance because of technology especially gaming that they don't even read anymore, which also hinders our literacy skills.
This article shows a teacher's views and why the calculator should not be allowed in school for tests. I agree with this because it takes away from students memorizing basic math so they are able to show the work. It also indicates students in other countries are better and advanced because they prohibit the use of calculators.
This is a wonderful article with statics of how technology has caused a decrease in children reading books. Children are going online watching videos and even though they may be reading text it is quite different from reading a book. There are online books but children are not interested in reading or paying for online books. Most children are video gaming online as well which consumes there time. Teenagers are online shopping for other things clothes, make-up etc. Teenagers in this digital age are not utilizing technology properly and there needs to be balance set by parents in order for the statics in literacy skills to improve.
http://www.squidoo.com/should-calculators-be-used-in-school-or-in-home-schooling-#module148560184 This article just had a couple points that were interesting to me. One is that when it comes to studying mathematics you need to have a good thought process going. Mathematics develops really good critical thinking skills. I understand that from personal experience. I was never good at math and I'm still not good at it. I just lose interest in it. I remember though trying to learn good problem solving and it was better to show my work and use my thought process instead of just having a calculator give me the answers right away. If I used a calculator I would have never fully understood the problem.
http://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse490ab/01wi/490ab-papers/waylon-brunette.html Here is another article that explains how students have a dependency on calculators because they don't have that ability to solve problems on their own. Teachers are also just grading on the right answer and not the process it took the student to get the answer in the first place. I remember when I was in school if my work wasn't shown on the paper my teacher would think I copied the answer or something. Back then you were mostly graded on the work you showed to get the answer. So that just tells me, students are just suppose to remember the answers. I have a good memory but I know I can't remember everything. I would rather look at a math problem and know how the process goes to solve it. When I had to be tutored for math, there were certain ways that person helped me figure out problems and there were no calculators involved. I was able to ace my test after that!
Here is the first article that I found last night. This one talks about how there is an imbalance in education concerning technology. It concerns over how reading for fun has decreased among young people, and that there needs to be a blend of using different techniques both new and old. That some of the new technologies don't always allow imagination to thrive. It also says that just because a classroom has new technology it isn't a guarantee for learning.
Thanks everyone for posting on here, this was my reason for this group page. It makes things easier to read everything on one page while taking care of others things. Megan thanks I see you started off the discussing on here and everyone came aboard.Great Job Team B
I found another article that I had recently found. It has to deal with the way that language is formed traditionally in schools, and with the use of social media having a part of it. It has to deal with the way that kids still need to learn in this traditional way in order to understand language. There is a part where it also talks about how to relate back to the past, which I feel is lacking in this age of digital technology. This article does have some important points to share for this topic.
Thanks everyone! I will make sure all who participated get points. I've been at the doctors all afternoon and then when I got home my computer wouldn't work, but now I will be getting that done and submitted. Sorry about the delay and any stress I caused. Believe me I was stressing about this. lol. Go Team B!!!!
I plan to present each point in a different paragraph. Since this project is a matter of which side has the best reasons for why the statement is either true or false. So my thought was who ever has more points that are great points wins this debate.
HOW CAN I HELP! sorry im late to the game and seem to be the only guy here. I can do whatever you all wan me to do. im a little lost in this assignment! please help!
This article caught my eye, because it gives a statement insisting that the Holocaust in fact did not happen. In school I was taught that it did happen, I was shown evidence (Survivors, pictures, movies, etc). I believe this article is a myth. This is another example of misinformation, and how one can be mislead from things your taught in school vs things you read on the internet.
This to is a very great article that I hope you all take a look at. Has many great points on how things get posted on the social media that are false and misleading. It even has picture that were posted to support the story. Also a link on a debate of how the world view Digital Versus Print This is the first in a series of articles that will look at how the Internet and other technological and social forces are changing the way people read.

This article is to support the article and my thoughts I added from NY TIMES yesterday.
Here is another article to support the article and statements on use of calculators with statistics and research study.
