Look at what apple is doing to protect their own hold on the musical pursestrings of society with this.

Apple is quite protective of the uses of their devices and although they allow the development of "apps" -- they made waves recently when they denied the app that allows people to download and listen directly to podcasts w/out synching w/ the computer. Mobile itunes doesn't offer this feature. So, there is "open" and truly "open." Iphone apps store isn't really open, if this is true.

"this app is a great demonstration of where mobile shopping is heading. With the abilities that are shown in this app, more and more apps are going to start including features like this that will offer information on virtually anything we can think of."

A nice example of where mobile computing may be heading and perhaps a stimulus for a video scene.

This survey shows that iPad with the $199 price tag is a 'serious" contender for the ipad. I had someone ask me about Kindle fire vs. iPad. Definitely people are comparing it.  Many people are definitely comparing the ipad to the Kindle fire although the Kindle fire has two issues that don't have anything to do with Amazon: the droid OS and the Droid app store. The droid OS still lacks in touch responsiveness from the reviews I read. The Droid app store is a lot more open but also includes more "junk" and even some privacy and virus laden things from what I hear. Does this matter to the average person who just wants a smaller device and a $199 price tag - we'll see. Tablets are definitely in our future. You can see the redesign of women's pocketbooks reflecting this!

New comic making web app which also has an i-pod compatible app. This lets you combine drawings, photos, and ready to use artwork to create caricatures. This is great. You can also mash up regular backgrounds with caricatures in the foreground.

This is discussing how more people are beginning to use their smartphones for medical research. There is a new app called iTriage that lets people research their symptoms and helps them find medical providers from where ever you are.

Bjork releases an album along with 3D images in an app for the ipad. This is how artists and music are evolving. It is the first of its kind. Interesting. I'm sending this to our Flat Classroom students as they study how technology is impacting arts, entertainment, and leisure. This would make a fascinating video.

In fact, the above list (along with thermos, cellophane, escalator, elevator, dry ice and many more) are all words that fell victim to those products' very success and, as they became more and more popular, slipped from trademarked status into common usage. Will "Google" manage to avoid this fate? This year has brought a spate of news stories about the word's addition to the Merriam-Webster and the Oxford English dictionaries, an honor that's simultaneously highly flattering and faintly unsettling. Consider, for example, this passage from a New York Times story published last May: "Jim sent a message introducing himself and asking, 'Do you want to make a movie?'" Mr. Fry recalled in a telephone interview from his home in Buda, Tex. 'So we Googled him, he passed the test, and T called him. That was in March 1996; we spent the summer coming up with the story, and we pitched it that fall.'" Now, since Larry and Sergey didn't actually launch Google until 1998, Mr. Fry's usage of 'Google' is as distressing to our trademark lawyers as it is thrilling to our marketing folks. So, lest our name go the way of the elevators and escalators of yesteryear, we thought it was time we offered this quick semantic primer. A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device that identifies a particular company's products or services. Google is a trademark identifying Google Inc. and our search technology and services. While we're pleased that so many people think of us when they think of searching the web, let's face it, we do have a brand to protect, so we'd like to make clear that you should please only use "Google" when you're actually referring to Google Inc. and our services. Withings is a company that has wi-fi enabled devices. These devices include apps and all kinds of smart-enabled tools (including ifttt.com integration.) Scales can automatically log your weight to evernote or a google doc to track, a blood pressure monitor and perhaps my favorite, a baby monitor that lets you dial in on junior using your iphone or ipad. (I needed that when my children were younger.) I am thinking about getting the baby monitor to use to monitor my classroom. So many different applications.
