Students learn mathematics by DOING mathematics, and not by watching someone else do mathematics. In recent years there has been an explosion in the number of high quality digital resources available from the Net and elsewhere that allow students to investigate, explore or consolidate the topics they are learning in their maths class.

Over the weekend I received an email from a reader asking me if I had a list of YouTube channels not named Khan Academy that offer mathematics lessons. I didn't have a list, but I said I would create one. Therefore, here is my short list of YouTube channels not named Khan Academy that offer mathematics lessons.

A+ Click is a free site full of online mathematics games for students at all grade levels. You can find games on A+ Click by selecting a grade level then selecting a topic. Alternatively, you select just a topic or just a grade level and browse through all of the games. Students do not need to register in order to play the games.

This could be a great mathematical conversation starter. Awesome for those students that are into Codes or hieroglyphs or even just plain old ancient egyptian history. Either way a sure fire way of getting the mathematical creative juices flowing.

Looking at the New Directions for school leadership and the teaching profession discussion paper, the only evidence presented to support the assertion that Victoria's education outcomes are not improving is the report "Challenges in Australian Education: results from PISA 2009: the PISA 2009 assessment of students' reading, mathematical and scientific literacy" Specifically the New Directions paper focuses on reading literacy, where in 2009, 14,251 students were given a two-hour pen and paper comprehension test. To get an idea of what types of competencies the reading test is assessing we can look at the sample test , with questions range from comprehension about a letter in a newspaper, the ability to interpret a receipt, comprehension around a short story, an informational text, and interpreting a table. While it doesn't seem unreasonable to want our students to be able to accurately perform these kind of tasks, these tests are not a true or accurate representation of the skills and competencies our students need in today's technology driven world.

A site that gives some great ideas for lessons, other relevant maths sites, software and videos about all areas of the maths curriculum.

Doing shape and or tessellation in Maths??? This blog post could come in handy. Some interesting discussion on tessellation in real life. So the next question is why do we teach tessellation in maths? Shouldn't we just get rid of this aspect of maths and create a new subject called design??

A Maths Dictionary for Kids is an animated, interactive online math dictionary for students which explains over 600 common mathematical terms and math words in simple language.

Whiteboard - Primary Mathematics Has a range of demonstration techniques, games etc for whitboard use in the classroom.

This is a great wiki in general for maths students and teachers. I particularly like some of the practical application of maths to everyday situations. For students to link real world concepts to abstract concepts is important for students to engage in their learning. It also links creative thinking in maths. Which in my opinion is what maths is all about. 

Looks like a fantastic interactive game says its mathematics based but i only got through two rooms before I had to leave. Either way some students are really going to get in to this one

Really great examples for maths

Some great ideas here for connecting Math to real world occurrences. It is heavily American but this site could be a source of great ideas for the student that needs extending

This looks like an amazing site with loads of activities for teachers and students. Amazing when do people find the time to put this together and who is paying for it?

Yep Andrew, total agree! Not quite sure how the stages relate to VELS. But loads of open ended problems and games. Seems to have activities for just about all of the different areas of the Maths cirriculum.
