Macau proposes to make digital currencies legal tender - 0 views

    The Executive Council of Macau, a special administrative region (SAR) of greater China, has completed discussing a draft bill proposing to include digital forms of currency as acceptable legal tender. Macau has relatively strong legal tender laws. Anyone who rejects or refuses to accept legal tender in payment will be fined between $123 and $1,237 (1,000 and 10,000 patacas). The bill will now be forwarded to the Legislative Assembly for further deliberations.

    The Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) has completed the development of a prototype digital Macau pataca (e-MOP) which will soon undergo sandbox and public testing. There is also a chance it will be linked to China's e-CNY and Hong Kong's e-HKD in the future. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) provided technical support, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is responsible for supervising and managing e-MOP issuance, cancellation and circulation. Macau Moves Step Closer to Digital Currency in Threat to Casinos - 0 views

    The government of Macau reportedly plans to amend laws to regulate the issuance of a virtual legal tender, and will work with the People's Bank of China (PBOC) to study the feasibility of issuing a digital currency. The aim would be to improve effectiveness in reducing money laundering, tax evasion and terrorism financing.

    China has launched its first automated digital yuan wallet-opening machine for holders of overseas passports, Hong Kong and Macau ID cards, and other identity verification documents. The machine allows users to exchange foreign currency banknotes for digital yuan on an automatically opened hard wallet. Existing digital yuan wallet holders can also use the machine to make overseas cash-powered top-ups.
