A new generation of programmers "would rather work with open systems and tools than closed and proprietary approaches, which are seen as more limiting." While the closed and proprietary systems mean big bucks, the open source means big change.

RiP! A Remix Manifesto (2009): Created over a period of six years, the documentary film features the collaborative remix work of hundreds of people who have contributed to the Open Source Cinema website, helping to create the "world's first open source documentary" as Gaylor put it. KINDA LONG BUT COOL.

This is a funny story about someone's Siri not knowing about Hurricane Sandy. It's kind of stresses the lesson to not rely on a single piece technology so much.

Another clear example of the success of open-source developing. How can the film and music business better adapt to this sort of open development model?

Film shot by people all over the world in one day.  The whole film is available online for free on YouTube (after watching an ad of course), and the footage has been made available to people. They've even made their own "remixes" of the trailer for the film. A great, high profile example of open source filmmaking.

Circa has created a new news app that will screw up journalism. As a story surfaces, the app updates the story from multiple sources found on the internet. Instead of reading one article, one will just read updates as they come about.

The "world's first open source documentary" (wiki). You pay what you feel to be right/reasonable (cannot put $00.00, but the minimum being one cent would seem too risky for the big money-making companies). Gotta love open source!

How to remix a song for our future class project

 A medias artist takes pictures of people taken without their consent on Google's street view and places them back where they were first taken. Is this art? Or is this misuse of private data?

Example of how remixes can be found all throughout society - from music to politics

A cooper union design student started posted erratic clothing designs online. The major source of images for these designs was google images. Appropriating images and blending them together as well as computer make for an interesting fashion statement.

The song Somebody that I Used to Know by Gotye is everywhere, including in my head. I found this video jokingly accusing Gotye of stealing the melodies from both Ba Ba Black Sheep and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to make his hit song. Its a funny video but one line in particular stands out in relation to the Letham reading: "I don't wanna live this lie. I wanna be an honest guy." At least the parody version of Gotye is acknowledging his source material.
