This article I just thought was interesting in regards to Jenkin's Participatory Culture article and that one of the new skills of new media is multitasking and distributed cognition. It makes me wonder why they are important. Why are these skills that children have to learn? Why can't they simply focus on one task or situation. This article asks whether questioning people's attention spans is even a worthy way to spend someone's time.

This article talks about the copyright issues of mash-ups and songs in Glee.  It's an interesting and brief article, but if you have time you should check out the comments section.

"Copyright holders even routinely demand that YouTube remove videos of kids dancing to popular music." That's just wrong...

Was trying to find this article that was on Yahoo! a year or so ago and stumbled on this... thought it was at least worth bookmarking. And made me wonder how they decide who to pursue for cases because some people openly admit in articles that they download/own music illegally and don't face any legal consequences. but a 12-yr-old?

There are variety of mascots and logos associated with schools. Unfortunately there are a lot more school than mascots and logos. Here is an article by Dennis Read on the usage of logos and the laws (if there are any) to protect them. 

This is an example of Jenkins convergence culture in the fact that it allows someone who may not have let the world know about his life, reveal his story that has now touched many people. As Jenkins says, "every important story gets told." Also, this is another way that Ben Breedlove was able to have social connections. He made more than this one video in which he gave relationship advice to his peers but this video was his last before his heart stopped. This was one video I thought of as I read that article.

An article about how (as the title suggests) parodies are fair use...usually.

This article explores DJ POGO's journey through disney copyright infringement and then permission through a deal with the company.  It's pretty darn interesting, for serious.

Circa has created a new news app that will screw up journalism. As a story surfaces, the app updates the story from multiple sources found on the internet. Instead of reading one article, one will just read updates as they come about.

This is a cool article that briefly discusses the history of file-sharing!  We all kind of know the jist of it, but it's interesting to see it all written out.

Just some of the interesting facets of new media art forms explored. The article explains how art is limited and unlimited by modernity. 

A news article by the Hunting News of NW University about copyright protection for fashion designer

We read some articles about how the recording company gets most of the money and makes all of the decisions. I've been keeping up with this band and they've decided to cut the middle man out and release an album themselves. They claim that this is the new age of music releases.

I really like this article. It's about a Web Remix art exhibit. The artist isn't sure how long he can keep it running since he knows he's infringing copyrights. But his statement below makes so much sense explaining how web collage is a natural derivation of what's online: ""If you see just one video on YouTube, it doesn't make sense to you," Quaranta explained. But as a collection, a thesis emerges."

Mentioned in the Something Borrowed article, the United States is trying to swing that parallel imports for pharmaceuticals violates the intellectual property of the western drug producers.

Like Jenkins discusses in the Participatory Culture, more and more children have access to creating technology that was at first limited to "experts" or adults. This article provides and example of this in Thomas Suarez who is a 12 year old who has created several of his own apps for iPads and iPhones. He has also has created an App Club at his school.

Pinterest is an online forum where people can post articles, videos, recipes, photos, etc., that express their own interests. It is a fascinating way in which "every consumer gets courted across multiple media platforms" since each person's pinterest "boards" depict multiple ways of gathering information and appeals to popular cultural phenomenons. It is also very similar to diigo in many ways that I think is interesting- different websites that are used to organize the mass amount of information that people encounter while searching the web.

For me, pinterest is the place where I, as the syllabus says, "keep found things found"

An article about Black Swan and the controversy about how much of the dancing Natalie Portman actually did and how much she unfairly took credit for. It's like plagiarizing!

Not entirely educational, but the link lists almost every example in media of when a fictional character thinks of an "original" idea that is in fact recycled from the past (like what is discussed with the Lolita article).
