What Neuroscience Tells Us about Spritual Disciplines | Christianity Today - 0 views

  • Neuroscience sheds light on how fasting and other spiritual disciplines work by training our subconscious mental processes.
  • our conscious self is far less in control over who you are and what you do than you realize.  "We are not the ones driving the boat of our behavior," says neuroscientist David Eagleman.
  • Jesus expected that dietary restriction would be a part of our spiritual practice. "When you fast," he said, not if.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • Don't fast for a cause, but to shape your soul.
  • by making the Lenten discipline of fasting about a cause, we are caving in to our cultural distaste for self-denial.
  • But more importantly, spiritual disciplines shape us in deep ways. Because our brains—at the very least—mediate, process, and experience our spiritual lives, the disciplines can train us to become more attuned to God himself.
  • when our blood sugar runs low, chemical signals from the blood stream reach the brain, which sends out signals to eat.
  • The subconscious brain is at work, guiding our actions and our behavior

My problem with Rhoberta's psychology when she points to "understanding" the roots of anger/rage as a route to healing is that it cannot produce freedom from your bondage. (I know this because I knew the emotional and spiritual roots of my rage for the full 25 years that I struggled with my it and that understanding didn't help me one bit. Only knowing "truth" can set you free. Understanding our past pain's roots doesn't produce truth or "freedom" from the pain. Only the truth that Jesus talks about at http://is.gd/NwDqOu can do that. gfp
  • trouble in relationships
  • We have to learn to manage incoming anger, too.
  • one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves
  • you may not have any boundaries
  • Anger is healthy. It is natural. It is a gift of perception, experience and biology
  •
Anger is one of the most powerful emotions and the most challenging one to manage for most people. Some of us can't "manage" it ...at all. At best, some of us can ONLY moderate our reaction to our amygdala's response to our perception of a violation of our so-called rights. That's why Essential #1 is so crucial. (I know because I fought a losing battle with anger/rage for over 25 years until recently when I re-discovered a truth that I had forgotten as a Jesus Follower. Yeh! We're NOT perfect ...just saved as someone said.) Sharia Myths & Facts - Muslim Canadian Congress - 0 views

  • the fight against sharia courts was started and led by Muslims, many of whom have had personal experience with sharia and left their former countries to escape it.
  • If it was divine, there would only be one version of it. Instead there are almost as many versions as there are Muslim communities. Moreover, it has evolved over time. The Sharia laws were developed by men and owe more to their cultures than to the Quran.
  • Not only does the Quran not endorse sharia courts, the whole notion of such courts violates the letter and the spirit of the Quran.

Public nakedness a good idea - Life & Style - NZ Herald News - 0 views

  • Public nakedness a good idea

This article by Kevin Sampson introduces the scientific facts around the controversial issue of the impact on children of seeing public nakedness in a non-sexual and naturist context. gfp (2012-02-08)
  • But are such protestations rational or mentally healthy?
  • Is it rational to regard the simply naked adult human body of either sex as offensive?
  • ...16 more annotations...
  • for everyone their body is a core part of their being.
  • Does it harm children to see naked adults walking, swimming, or sunbathing?
  • There is no evidence that the sight of the naked human adult is likely to cause children harm.
  • Studies show that the experience is either benign or positive.
  • Children are not born believing certain parts of their bodies are dirty, or offensive. They have to be taught that by adults who do it because of their own insecurities or simply to conform to social mores.
  • If children are raised believing their genitals should always be hidden, or are offensive, then this creates a recipe for great anguish as they go through their teenage years with its physical, mental, and hormonal changes.
  • The conflict created between these erroneous beliefs and inner physical forces can create lifetime psychoses in some people.
  • The phrase "Prudery is child abuse with good intentions" is correct.
    • Gary Patton

One Web definition of 'prudery' is: "primness: excessive or affected modesty."
  • Acceptance of simple public nakedness also confers significant other benefits
  • Naturists know, however, that the human body comes in a bewildering number of sizes and shapes. Once you have seen a multitude of naked people you realise only a few per cent of the population could even aim to achieve the "perfect" body.
  • stress is avoided.
  • children and teenagers grew up in a society where the sight of naked human beings of all ages, in all their glory, faults and imperfections, was common. Young people would then be able to resist the messages of inferiority pushed on to them.
  • The "live and let live" attitude prevails. Also the evidence is that, rather than being harmful, acceptance of simple public nakedness would be beneficial to society.
  • Body perception in this country has become so distorted for women that they feel disgusted about suckling their own infants. That is a very dangerous thing.
  • we should all respect God's wishes on this matter. If He truly wanted us to be naked, we would have been born that way. Wait a minute.
  • Prudery is child abuse. The reasons may not be immediately obvious but they are well understood. Try comparing any body-shame or body-knowledge related indicator, teenage abortion, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, body dysmorphic disorders for prudish countries such as the USA with those with less body-shame such as Denmark or many other European countries. The outcomes of prudery are appalling.
