An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison and ordered to pay $2.6 million in restitution for being convicted of mail fraud and embezzlement (theft of employer's funds). Dinesh Shankar, 41 of San Jose, California was sentenced to 33 months in prison as a result of the mail fraud conviction for embezzling from a medical device company. Details here.

Bringing relief to the convicted offenders with death penalty, the Apex court has commuted death sentence into life term imprisonment on the basis of delay in considering over the mercy pleas asked by the convicted prisoners. The panel of a bench was headed by 40th Chief Justice of our country, P. Sathasivam.

The apex court of India had granted the plea of former Rajiv Gandhi's assassins by commuting their death sentence to life term imprisonment today a short while ago. The Supreme Court has also given authority to the state government to decide if the murderers should be released or kept in prison.
