This presentation’s content was based on these two original posts: “Design Thinking is Killing Creativity” and its follow up post “How Can We Fix the Problems of Design Thinking“. Do have a look as the originals if you would like some more background information. For the purposes of this presentation, I took the opportunity to clean up the content and add a few new details.

The design process is what puts Design Thinking into action. It’s a structured approach to generating and developing ideas. The Design Thinking Toolkit for Educators, available as a free download here, provides guidance through the five phases of the design process. It outlines a sequence of steps that leads from defining a challenge to building a solution. The toolkit offers a variety of instructional methods to choose from, including concise explanations, useful suggestions and tips.

The HCD Toolkit was designed specifically for NGOs and social enterprises that work with impoverished communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The free kit, available for download here, walks users through the human-centered design process and supports them in activities such as building listening skills, running workshops, and implementing ideas.

Die Frage, die sich bei solchen, primär offline generierten, Projekten im Nachhinein stellt: Welche Vorteile hätte es gehabt, wenn der gesamte Prozess qualitativ durch Social Media begleitet worden wäre? Was hätte sich am Ergebnis eventuell verändert? Und wie liesse sich heute dieser Prozess gegebenenfalls qualitativ anreichern über Social Media? Macht es einen Unterschied? Oder kann man die kollektive Intelligenz des Web 2.0 auch bei guter Offline-Vernetzung generieren?

Design Thinking ist ein Prozess der Schüler unterstützt Lernen zu gestalten, ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf sich und ihre Umgebung zu lenken und diese letztendlich selber aktiv mitzugestalten. Schüler engagieren sich mehr und erzielen eine höhere Lernleistung, wenn sich der Lernbezug auf reale Projekte und für sie relevante Situationen konzentriert.

That tool is abductive reasoning

The vast majority of students are exposed to formal logic only by inference and then only to the two dominant forms of logic — deductive reasoning and inductive reasoning.

Formal logic isn’t systematically taught in our North American educational system, except to students of philosophy or the history of science.

What do we think a “computer” is? I like to contrast three dominant metaphors or paradigms: PERSON, TOOL, MEDIA.
