In 1938 Action Comics editors was looking for a new comic book superhero similar to Superman, Bob Kane and Bill Finger got together and created that new superhero, Batman! Well according to Bob Kane he had drawn a picture of what he thought the Caped Crusader should look like, however, Frank Foster has a different story. But alas in 1939 the first Batman comic was published and the rest is 'history'. One major difference between Superman and Batman however is the fact that Superman has super powers which comes from his Kryptonian background while Batman is mortal, a simple human being who depends on his 'awesome gadgets'. In this lens we'll look at who's actually played the Caped Crusader over the years on television and the big screen. In 1956, Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff decided Batman and Robin both needed female counterparts in order to stave off the gay rumors about these characters and voila Batwoman appeared, aka Kathy Kane (issue #233 in Detective Comics) for Batman and then in 1961 Batgirl, aka Betty Kane (issue #139 in the Batman comics) appeared as a sidekick for Batwoman. When Julius Swartz took over as editor both of these Batwoman and Batgirl characters were taken out and were replaced in 1967 by the Barbara Gordon 'Batgirl' (issue #359 in Detective Comics). Comic Books are basically a lot like the soap operas, they get a little far fetched at times and the Batman series isn't any different. Batgirl not only has gone through a lot of transformation with just her attire and in the movie but she's gone through actual character changes as well through out the years. In the 1960s, Catwoman's catsuit was green in color, which was typical of villains of that era. In the 1990s, she usually wore a skintight purple catsuit, before switching to a black PVC catsuit that recalls Michelle Pfeiffer's costume in Batman Returns. In recent years, artists depictions have usually alternated between those two costumes. Ed Brubaker, the writer behind the 2001 revamp of the character, has stated that Selina's current costume was inspired by Emma Peel's iconic leather catsuit in The Avengers TV series.
