The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has expanded its collection of eBooks to more than 200 titles. GPO and Google formed a partnership in 2010 to convert Government publications into eBook format and make the eBooks available through Google's eBookstore. GPO and Google's endeavor has increased Government transparency by making Government publications accessible to the public in a digital format.

Am I wrong to think that these ebooks should be free if the goal is government transparency?

Another factor in the pricing of ebooks--Amazon's ranking algorithms, which may result in price increases to indie books so that they will be noticed. Indie author Edward W. Robertson is a stats junkie who's been studying the e-seller's algorithms for a while.

One publisher is giving away the ebook when a print book is purchased. Is that good for the industry?

Last week, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed replacing school textbooks with e-books in order to help plug a state budget gap. Now, textbook giant Pearson has responded with digital content to supplement California's programs in biology, chemistry, algebra 2, and geometry.
