When Did Twitter Grow Up? - 1 views

Woah I didn't realize that a majority of Twitters users were adults ages 35 to 49. It was mentioned that "This is not a teenage application; it's something adults use." I don't know many adults that use it besides celebrities.
  •
I also thought that was interesting. Most of my friends use twitter but very few parents do. I was shocked that most twitter users are 35-49. I know my parents would never use twitter.
  •
I was also shocked by this-- I work at the mall, and from all the middle/high school age conversations I hear, it appears that they are all on twitter. I have lost count of how many teen girls have been chatting with friends about what they "tweeted" and how it affected their lives. Although I do admit that these are only teenage girls that come to Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, so I'm sure that misses a huge chunk.

How Twitter can tell you when you are going to get sick - 1 views

  •
By applying machine learning and natural language understanding techniques the health of Twitter users and people in their area can be determined with high accuracy by plotting geo-tagged tweets on a map. I posted this article because it makes me wonder how else we can use social networking site's public data to predict information beneficial of everyone--not just site users.
  •
Amanda, this was a great article! I never thought about even trying to map something like this! It reminds me of when the Packers lose, and my Facebook explodes; I'd like to see how those status updates change the further away you get from Green Bay, then Wisconsin, etc.

Why We Should Thank Twitter's Rape Defenders - 0 views

On Yammer, I posted a new article that addressed what happened on Twitter during this case. This article goes more into how Middle schools, High schools, and parents in Torrington, Connecticut, make efforts to communicate with students about rape after the students tweeted their support of two fellow classmates accused of statutory rape.

Twitter, Facebook, and social activism : The New Yorker - 0 views

  •
An article addressing the ways protesting was done in the past (sit-ins, press involvement, etc) and how it has changed with social media (Twitter, ect). Essentially, Malcolm Gladwell argues that activism through social media does not have the strength that social change requires because the strategies are built around people who are weakly tied to others through social networks
  •
I liked this article because in the past people would protest with signs and today we can use social media and it gets a lot more people involoved. I think this is a postive side to social media.
