Calkins | May 11, 1985Concerning your recent editorial entitled "Time to reconsider the draft": If President Reagan suddenly decides to join those who are advocating a return to the draft, it will prove once and for all that his promises are basically worthless. After all, in 1980 he declared that he opposed a peacetime draft or registration as an unwarranted intrusion into personal freedom. Within two years, however, he decided to continue registration, in his words, in case of a national emergency.
