Faced with a shortage of primary care doctors, more and more clinics are relying on nurse practitioners to fill the gap. But that creates another gap, in the level of training providers bring to the job. Residency programs--once reserved for physicians--are popping up for nurse practitioners as well.

This study reviewed the struggles new APRNs were having when transitioning to new healthcare providers. It discussed the benefits of a formal residency program for new APRNs and used the benefits the programs provided for new MDs to support the findings that these formal residencies could provide for new APRNs.

This articles takes about the importance of a structured residency program for new nurse practitioners. A structured residency program helps to the NP to get acclimated in the new role of being a provider and ensures patients are receiving quality care.

Here is a recent commentary written by two nursing professors from the University of Pennsylvania SON about nurse residency programs. Until reading this article, I was not aware that the IOM recommends residency programs for nurses who complete an advanced practice degree program. Currently, data illustrates that these programs improve practitioner confidence and strengthen NP role identity; however, there is a lack of data showing the impact of these programs on patient outcomes. These professors believe that residences should not be mandated but rather encouraged.

Personally I think NP residencies are a very important vehicle for transitioning into practice, and should be financially supported by the government the same way that medical residencies are supported!

Found this an interesting perspective because of the increasing demand for primary care providers.

My intended area of practice is in HIV nursing. In my last post I provided a link to the competencies needed to be an advanced practice nurse in the field, and I talked a little bit about steps I'm taking to close that gap. To hopefully move me along the continuum from novice to expert. I thought this article was interesting and provided a broader approach in how nurses might use residency program for exactly that purpose. The article talks about DNPs but it is no different for the MSN prepared nurse. It seems that residencies may become more the norm in the future - and that might be good for all, new nurses and patients alike.

Nurse Practitioner residency programs are a fairly new concept in the healthcare arena. The first program, introduced in 2007, was developed by Community Health Center, Inc. in Connecticut with the goal to increase the number of family nurse practitioners in the community health settings.

New direction for NP programs and post-graduate options

The transition of newly graduated nurse practitioners (NPs) into practice can be challenging for the employer and the NPs. A new-graduate residency model for NPs along with evaluative criteria is presented from a primary care setting. residency models are of benefit for new-graduate NPs to ease the transition to practice and promote patient care quality, and nurse retention, and satisfaction.

This resource is a research study analyzing the differences in cost and pediatric patient outcomes between hospital teams run by residents alone, PNP's alone and PNP/MD teams. Overall, the researches concluded that incorporating PNP's into hospital care can reduce costs for patients requiring certain treatments as well as provide care that is comparable to the care given by medical residents.

The Mayo clinic offers a form of residency for new grads. Mayo School of Health Sciences educates and prepares allied health professionals. The school enrolls students who excel in academic achievement to become providers of the best care to patients.

From this article, it acknowledges the importance of inter-professional collaboration. At the end of the residency program, NPs held a stronger appreciation for the roles of other health care professionals as well as the benefit from getting feedback from different specialties. NP fellows learned from each other's strengths and weakness and how to function as a team.
