My intended area of practice is in HIV nursing. In my last post I provided a link to the competencies needed to be an advanced practice nurse in the field, and I talked a little bit about steps I'm taking to close that gap. To hopefully move me along the continuum from novice to expert. I thought this article was interesting and provided a broader approach in how nurses might use residency program for exactly that purpose. The article talks about DNPs but it is no different for the MSN prepared nurse. It seems that residencies may become more the norm in the future - and that might be good for all, new nurses and patients alike.

Great article by John Iglehart, Founding Editor, Health Affairs Population aging and recent coverage expansions have fueled concerns about physician shortages in primary care, leading several influential groups to recommend that nurse practitioners take on a larger role. The ACA promotes nurse practitioners as an integral part of the future workforce, and emerging care settings, such as retail clinics, rely heavily on nurse practitioners.

This article present a gap in research regarding advocacy at the APRN level, despite the large amount of evidence surrounding advocacy at the RN level. The article calls for more research regarding if and how advocacy may differ at the APRN level and how exactly institutions are preparing APRN students for the advocacy role.

This 2016 article provides a brief overview of progress made in expanding APRN scope of practice to utilize a practitioner's education to the fullest extent. Although the removal of barriers to scope of practice is progressing, there is still much work ahead. This article recommends that to meet our goals, we must encourage other HCPs, policy makers, etc. that investing in our profession, i.e. becoming stakeholders, is a necessity to optimize health care practice.

This article discusses the benefits and pit-falls to autonomous primary care Nurse practitioner practice and advocates for cost effective improvements to our healthcare system. The research suggests that Nurse practitioners who practice independently report greater job satisfaction, improved patient outcomes and provide low cost, high quality services that are equal or superior to primary care physicians. Unfortunately, current healthcare reimbursement models, policies and reluctant physicians have created barriers to autonomous NP practices. The author suggests that autonomous practice requires further research across the U.S, the establishment of a well-defined model and the evaluation of patient outcomes, in order to determine whether the present day Nurse Practitioner requires future collaborative agreements with physicians, in order to provide quality patient care across the United States.

This article speaks about the future of healthcare - specifically, how primary care is at the foundation of a robust health care system. The author argues that the key to improving the triple aim (health of populations, patient experience, cost of care) is to remove barriers to NP practice, allowing them to practice to their fullest capacity.

This is an excellent overview of NP history and practice changes written by Arlene W. Keeling PhD, RN, FAAN. It includes a historical narrative for the NP role that includes key figures (Lillian Wald, Mary Breckenridge, Loretta Ford) with seminal legislation, challenges to the practice, and future implications.

This article does a great job of summarizing the history of geriatric NPs role in care, the development education for geriatric NPs beginning with the first program in 1966 and the unmet demand for nurses trained in geriatrics.
