This article is an excellent resource for new graduate NPs to help them transition from student to proficient NP during the first year of practice. The article is from 3 different perspectives including patient, colleague, and clinic factors which all contribute to the transition period for new graduates.

Here is a recent commentary written by two nursing professors from the University of Pennsylvania SON about nurse residency programs. Until reading this article, I was not aware that the IOM recommends residency programs for nurses who complete an advanced practice degree program. Currently, data illustrates that these programs improve practitioner confidence and strengthen NP role identity; however, there is a lack of data showing the impact of these programs on patient outcomes. These professors believe that residences should not be mandated but rather encouraged.

Interdisciplinary teamwork across industries

I really liked this article because it focused on crisis resource management in Emergency Medicine. Seven perceived barriers to effective team performance in the ED were listed with the number one barrier being communication between disciplines. Further, of 81 (nurses, physicians, and residents) 100% felt that effective communication and effective leadership were very important team management skills that could effect the outcome of a resuscitation. Additionally, the number one contributing factor to adverse resuscitation outcomes was poor communication (96.2% out of 79 participants). Though other barriers and contributing factors to adverse outcomes were identified, communication was reported as the most contributory. Coming from an emergency room myself, I totally love the aspect of interdisciplinary collaboration. In resuscitation you are working with the physician, the nurses, the techs, pharmacy, the lab, the radiology department--and following a successful resuscitation, you are collaborating with the intensivist/pulmonolgist, cardiologist, and potentially other specialists, as well as the ICU staff members. The patient is relying on effective communication and collaboration to obtain the best outcome possible. And this communication and collaboration is not the sole responsibility of the provider, but EVERYONE on the team!

Great document that highlights the scope of practice of CNMs and the patient population.

This article shares an experience of an NP in Nevada who had been trying to care for patients in under served areas but was having difficulty finding MDs to sign agreements with in those areas. This inhibited her ability to treat people in need but, thankfully, a new law was passed July 1 that enabled her to treat these people to the full extent her education taught her to, without having to rely on an agreement with an MD. It is important for us to remain aware of our scope of practice but also to fight for our ability to practice to the full extent we're being taught to do.

The transition of newly graduated nurse practitioners (NPs) into practice can be challenging for the employer and the NPs. A new-graduate residency model for NPs along with evaluative criteria is presented from a primary care setting. Residency models are of benefit for new-graduate NPs to ease the transition to practice and promote patient care quality, and nurse retention, and satisfaction.

This study reviewed the struggles new APRNs were having when transitioning to new healthcare providers. It discussed the benefits of a formal residency program for new APRNs and used the benefits the programs provided for new MDs to support the findings that these formal residencies could provide for new APRNs.

This articles takes about the importance of a structured residency program for new nurse practitioners. A structured residency program helps to the NP to get acclimated in the new role of being a provider and ensures patients are receiving quality care.

My intended area of practice is in HIV nursing. In my last post I provided a link to the competencies needed to be an advanced practice nurse in the field, and I talked a little bit about steps I'm taking to close that gap. To hopefully move me along the continuum from novice to expert. I thought this article was interesting and provided a broader approach in how nurses might use residency program for exactly that purpose. The article talks about DNPs but it is no different for the MSN prepared nurse. It seems that residencies may become more the norm in the future - and that might be good for all, new nurses and patients alike.

This article discusses the role of the acute care pediatric nurse practitioner and how it has developed since its beginning in the 90s. It also dives into the clinical outcomes of AC-PNPs and takes a look at how the role will continue to grow/develop to meet patient needs.
