Digital gap between rural and nonrural America persists | Pew Research Center - 4 views

  •
Check out this report on how rural America is less connected than urban America. Any surprises?
  •
Surprised with how prevalent some of this tech is in my life and those I know that a large segment is doing without it. I wonder if there are other demographic correlations besides rural/nonrural that might inform why there is such a gap. Are there age/occupation/environmental factors that might also be at play?
  •
Honestly, not really any huge surprises for me. I lived in a very rural area for about 3 years, and it was hard getting cell phone service!

Social media as a complementary learning tool for teaching and learning: The case of yo... - 0 views

  •
author: George Ligon IV I recently read an article about a study on college students use of Youtube to support academic learning. According to Alexa (2015), Youtube is the third most visited website in the world (as cited by Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018). The study explored students' usage and their perceptions of Youtube's effectiveness as an academic learning tool. Out of 312 respondents 71% stated they used Youtube for academic learning purposes (Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018). According to Moghavvemi et al. (2018), 76% of respondents stated they used Youtube to learn how to solve problems, 77% used it to answer questions, and 83% used it to watch videos that were suggested by friends. In addition to this, Moghavvemi et al. (2018), reported 70.5% of respondents believed they learned more from watching Youtube than reading a book. Thus, the findings supported previous studies which found using videos to teach was an effective tool to enhance academic performance (Moghavvemi, Sulaiman, Jaafar, & Kasem, 2018). Perceptions of Information Literacy Skills among Undergraduate Students in the Social M... - 0 views

  •
This article focuses on how college students evaluate information on social media. It also included an investigation of whether students use social media for their coursework and which tools they prefer. Finally, the authors surveyed students regarding metaliteracy topics, such ast their knowledge of copyright & fair use and privacy. Overall, the study found that students are moderately aware of and concerned with the credibility and accuracy of information, but are far more concerned with privacy issues. Understanding of legal issues associated with the re-use of information was rather low, and even less knowledge of cyber crimes.

Introduce a new way to retain knowledge from Kindle books | Diigo - 1 views

  •
On this is going to be a game changer for me! Not exactly social media, but ... Ty clipped from the Diigo blog, which led me there, and then I found this entry. I can import my highlighted passages from Kindle reading to Diigo? SOLD! I've felt limited by kindle reading/highlighting because then my notes are still stuck on the kindle. But with this integration ... oh my, the possibilities!

Playing around with the annotation feature. Forgive the spamming of the group, but this article may be of interest, given it is Diigo's self-reflection

I liked reading the comments. I didn't notice changes, so presumably they didn't remove anything that I use! They said they would remove a discover feature (helping newcomers search for content/groups?). That's OK with me. Interesting in the comments was some discussion of individual workflows with Diigo and other tools (Pocket, IFTTT, InoReader, OneTab).

This article gives a good overview of other literature and studies on the topic of web 2.0 in the workplace, particularly relating to learning in the workplace. They've taken that research and created a theoretical model that can be used to study individual, social and organisational effects on web 2.0-based learning in the workplace.

Enhancing Student Learning Through Web 2.0 and Social Networking Technology - 0 views

  •
Great research article on Web 2.0 tools and student learning. From 2013 so fairly recent - Aditi Pai, Spelman College Jim Stenerson, Pace University Michael Gaines, University of Miami Introduction It is well documented over the years that technology has impacted education and changed the landscape of teaching and learning. For the most part information technology has been credited with making teaching and learning an active and engaging process for both the students and the faculty (Redecker et al 2009).

"Augmented reality, which is better than reality" - made me laugh! This was an interesting take on Pokemon Go, and I appreciate that he said that we as educators shouldn't focus on the technology of it, but what it unlocks in the person using it. Thanks for sharing!

This quote stuck out to me "Education doesn't happen to students, but inside them. I can't remember where I heard that, but it's true." So VERY true! It's an internal process. Very cool article.

Two Men Fall Down Cliff While Playing 'Pokemon Go' - 2 views

  •
Two men fell off a cliff Wednesday in San Diego's North County while playing "Pokemon Go," the Encinitas Fire Department confirmed. San Diego Lifeguards reported that someone had fallen off a cliff at E Street around 1:12 p.m. When the Encinitas Fire Department arrived, they found a man around 80 to 90 feet down the cliff, on the beach. Be aware of the surroundings while playing this game! Safety first!

I saw this story earlier. Pretty crazy! Those cliffs are dangerous, people fall off them several times a year.

This game is definitely taking the nation by storm. Check out this article about a girl getting hit by a car while playing. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/15-year-old-hit-by-car-after-playing-pokemon-go/1100-6441810/

There definitely are some crazy things happening with Pokemon Go. Not sure that I want to get involved!!
  •
I think it's really important that the players understand that it is just a game! And don't be too engrossed in it that he or she just forgot everything about safety.
  •
I just wish I could play it. It is only available in one remote city in South Korea due to antiquated laws dating back to the Korean war.
  •
As an avid pokemon fan I definitely tried the game out. I wasn't super impressed by it. I think most of the mobile phone apps are too simple for me to enjoy playing regularly. I will say that people getting hurt while engaging with them seems to be on the rise. Maybe there should be some sort of a warning when these games boot up. Something along the lines of "PLEASE LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING" might be helpful. lol.

Coincidentally, some library colleagues and I are trying to implement this into FSU. We hope to find a department interested in using all OER textbooks. It seems like a challenge, but we are confident that if one school will jump on board, students will encourage others to follow their example!

"Big Data" describes vast data sets that, when analyzed by algorithms, may reveal patterns, associations, and trends. In particular, these findings relate to human behavior and interactions. These data sets are treasure troves and -- when unlocked by the correct algorithm -- can release powerful findings.
