The Superintendent of Bibb County Schools has made it mandatory that all student become proficient in Mandarin by the time they finish high school. This has fueled a lot of debate because many students in the county are from a low socioeconomic background and many believe that focusing more on academics or even Spanish would be more appropriate.
http://www.hcz.org/ The HCZ is led by its President & CEO Geoffrey Canada. They have a pipeline to help all students in the 24-hour block of Harlem, NY. All of the children served in this area are at a socioeconomic disadvantage. By the time they get to high school/college are the first in their family to go. The HCZ has several charter schools for its students.
